NCAA Wrap-Up

This year's tournament marked the 50th NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament that I have watched, going all the way back to 1975, when UK made a run to the finals.  I calculate UK's record over those 50 tournaments as follows:

29 trips to the Regional Semifinals (1 point each) = 29 points
22 trips to the Regional Finals (2 points each) = 44 points
11 trips to the Final Four (4 points each) = 44 points
7 trips to the National Final (8 points each) = 56 points
4 National Championships (16 points each) = 64 points

That's a record of 44-25 in games after the first two rounds, and a total of 237 points.

If you apply that standard to all other teams, then here is your top 20 over the last 50 NCAA Tournaments:

1.  Duke:  51-25 (292 points) (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015)
17.  Houston:  14-9 (65)

And here are the four winningest programs of all time:

1.  Kentucky:  2,422-770 (.759)
2.  Kansas:  2,414-909 (.726)
3.  N. Carolina:  2,395-874 (.733)
4.  Duke:  2,335-933 (.715)

And that closes the book on the 2024-25 NCAA Basketball Season.

  1. By the way, here's Tennessee's record on the system above:

    3-10 (16 points)

Tennessee, Cincinnati, and W. Virginia each have 16 points.

  2. Over the 50 years, the best game I saw was Duke v. Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional Final. The best tournament I saw was the 1983 Tournament won by N. Carolina St. The best player I saw was Larry Bird in the 1979 Tournament. The best coach I saw was Coach K.

  3. My favorite game is UK's win over Duke in the 1998 Regional Final. My least favorite game is UK's loss to L.S.U. in the 1986 Regional Final. My favorite UK team was the 1993 team that lost to the Fab Five. The best UK team was the 1996 team.

    1. I pretty much missed the whole Mashburn/Delk/Turner party, but I gather you're right on those based on how I hear people talk about them. And I know you're right on Davis and Givens.

  5. Over the last 50 years, 22 different teams have won the National Championship. Nineteen of those teams made the top 20 list above. The other three are Marquette (1977), N. Carolina St. (1983), and Baylor (2021).

  6. It's staggering to me that the Play-In for the NBA playoffs lasts for four days.

  7. The Cleveland Cavaliers won 64 games this year, and I can't name anyone on their team.

  8. As far as I can tell, here are the Cavaliers starters:

PG: Darius Garland, 6' 1", 192 lbs., played four games for Vanderbilt
SG: Donovan Mitchell, 6' 3", 215 lbs., Louisville
SF: Max Strus, 6' 5", 215 lbs., DePaul
PF: Evan Mobley, 6' 11", 215 lbs., So. California
    C: Jarrett Allen, 6' 9", 243 lbs., Texas

I vividly remember the saga of Darius Garland at Vandy. He was the highest-ranked recruit Vandy had ever had, and through four games he was incredible. He then got hurt, played no more games for the rest of the season, and then went to the NBA. Without him, Vandy -- who had been planning to go to the NCAA Tournament -- went 0-18 in the SEC. Coach Bryce Drew was fired. And Vandy spent the next five years losing with Jerry Stackhouse.

But I've never heard of any of these other guys.

  9. From Donovan Mitchell's Wikipedia page: "In 2010, Mitchell was present at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich (Conn.) when LeBron James announced his decision to sign with the Miami Heat."
