I'm not going to watch the Oscars, and I didn't watch any of the movies this year. But they are on tonight, and if I read about anything worth commenting on, I'll put it here.
Zoe Saldana wins for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Emilia Perez." She was very enthusiastic. But on the whole, this has been a very subdued Oscars so far.
Anyway, it's been a very traditional ceremony so far -- we have a lot of 50 and 60-somethings handing out awards, and everyone is dressed to the nines.
And now Mick Jagger has appeared! He's here to give the award for "Best Original Song." He tells a funny story about how the Academy really wanted Bob Dylan.
Of course, they used to perform all the Original Songs during the ceremony, but they don't do that. Instead, we had a James Bond medley earlier in the show.
The Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film goes to "I'm Not a Robot." Once again, I beg the Academy to help us understand where we can go see these films.
Now Morgan Freeman comes out to introduce a segment on those who died since the last Oscars, including:
Maggie Smith Gena Rowlands Dabney Coleman Bob Newhart Kris Kristofferson Teri Garr John Amos Donald Sutherland Louis Gossett, Jr. Shelly Duvall David Lynch James Earl Jones And, of course, Gene Hackman
This is always one of my favorite parts of the show.
The Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role goes to Adrian Brody for "The Brutalist." He also won the BAFTA. This is his second Academy Award -- he won back in 2003 for "The Pianist."
So while the awards seemed scattered at the beginning, in the end "Anora" won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. That's a huge night.
For the record, I am a fan of early Bob Dylan music.
ReplyDeleteKieran Culkin wins Best Supporting Actor for his role in "A Real Pain."

ReplyDeleteThe winner is "El Mal" from "Emilia Perez."
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for best Documentary Short Film goes to "The Only Girl in the Orchestra." I think that's on Netflix, so I may watch it.
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film goes to "No Other Land."
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for Best Sound goes to "Dune: Part Two."
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for Best Visual Effects goes to "Dune: Part Two."

ReplyDeleteI have the Oscars on TV, by the way, but I have the sound turned down (most of the time).
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for best International Feature Film goes to Brazil, for "I'm Still Here."
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the British had their BAFTA Awards a few weeks ago. They had the same supporting actor and actress winners that we've seen tonight.
ReplyDeleteThe BAFTA also awarded "Conclave" the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. But at the BAFTAs, the Best Original Screenplay went to "A Real Pain."
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for Best Score goes to "The Brutalist."
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role goes to Adrian Brody for "The Brutalist." He also won the BAFTA. This is his second Academy Award -- he won back in 2003 for "The Pianist."
ReplyDeleteAnd that's all for me from tonight.
ReplyDeleteWait, here are two more:
ReplyDeleteBest Director: Sean Baker, for "Anora."
Best Actress: Mikey Madison, for "Anora"
Mikey Madison won the BAFTA, but the BAFTAs gave Best Director to "The Brutalist."
So all the major acting awards were the same at both the BAFTAs and the Oscars. But "Anora" got the Best Directing Oscar instead of "The Brutalist."
ReplyDeleteNow we have Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan to give the last award -- the award for Best Picture. Here are the nominees:
ReplyDeleteAnora
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Perez
I'm Still Here
Nickel Boys
The Substance
Wicked
And the Oscar goes to: "Anora." This is a break from the BAFTA's, which gave the award to "Conclave."
ReplyDeleteSo while the awards seemed scattered at the beginning, in the end "Anora" won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. That's a huge night.
