For the record, Ken Pom's data show that it was a no-brainer to put UNC in the field. He has UNC as number 33 in the country, which means that they should have been a nine seed. Indiana was ranked 48, and West Virginia was ranked 53, so they should not have been in the field at all.
ReplyDeleteHere's Ken Pom's analysis of UK's chances:
ReplyDelete86.4 percent chance of reaching the round of 32
49.4 percent chance of reaching the round of 16
20.8 percent chance of reaching the round of 8
7.6 percent chance of reaching the Final Four
2.4 percent chance of playing for the National Championship
0.8 percent chance of winning it all
Ken Pom played the tournament a million times, and one of the Number One seeds won the title 68.8 percent of the time. Duke has a 22.9 percent chance. Florida has an 18.8 percent chance. Auburn has a 14.9 percent chance. Houston has a 12.2 percent chance.
ReplyDeleteMost years, we get a team in the Final Four that hasn't been there in 20 years. This year, the teams most likely to fill that slot are Tennessee, Iowa St., Maryland, and St. John's.

ReplyDeleteFour Regional Titles being handed out tonight:
ReplyDelete2d: Madisonville-N. Hopkins v. Henderson Co.
5th: Adair Co. v. N. Hardin
8th: N. Oldham v. S. Oldham
9th: Cooper v. Erlanger Lloyd
Indiana has hired Darian DeVries as its new men's basketball coach. DeVries had several successful years at Drake, and then one year at West Virginia. It seems odd to be leaving WVU after a single year. This leaves Iowa and West Virginia looking for coaches.
ReplyDeleteThis off-season will be a real test for Vandy, as their coach will undoubtedly be a target.
ReplyDeleteJason Frakes tweets: "If you like drive and kick, you'll love the 8th Region."
ReplyDeleteCooper wins the Ninth Region, hammering Lloyd 53 to 38.
ReplyDeleteAccording to folks on the Internet, Cooper's coach was told weeks ago that he would be fired after the season. Now he's going to State.
ReplyDeleteAdair County wins the Fifth Region, cruising past North Hardin 62 to 48.
ReplyDeleteSouth Oldham beats North Oldham in OVERTIME, 53 to 50.
Henderson County wins the Second Region 52 to 34, and the Colonels go to the State Tournament for the first time since 1999.
