Month of MLB: Day 28

For the first time since 2009, we will have a World Series game in Yankee Stadium.  The Yankees will be starting Clarke Schmidt (5-5, 2.85 ERA in 16 starts).  The Dodgers will respond with Walker Buehler (1-6, 5.38 ERA in 16 starts).  Either manager will be happy if his starter makes it through the fourth inning without getting shelled.

  1. Each of the first two games in the Series ended with the trailing team coming to bat with two outs and the bases loaded. In Game One, Freddie Freeman his a grand slam. In the Game Two, Jose Trevino flew out. That's the difference in the Series so far.

  2. The Yankees are sticking with their lineup:

    1. Torres, 2b
    2. J. Soto, rf
    3. Judge, cf
    4. Stanton, dh
    5. Chisholm, Jr., 3b
    6. Volpe, ss
    7. Rizzo, 1b
    8. Trevino, c
    9. Verdugo, lf

  3. No one for the Yankees wears a single-digit number, as the Yankees have retired every number from 1 to 10. They've also retired 15, 16, 20, 21, 23, 32, 37, 42, 44, 46, 49, and 51.

  4. The Dodgers have retired 1, 2, 4, 14, 19, 20, 24, 32, 39, 42, and 53. I noticed that Ice Cube was wearing a 24 jersey on Saturday night.

  5. The Dodgers called on Brad Paisley to do the National Anthem in Game One, but the Yankees counter with Leslie Odom, Jr. for Game Three. He is great, just as you would expect him to be.

  6. In response to Ice Cube, the Yankees have sent out their own rapper, but I don't know anything about rappers, and Fox won't put up a caption to identify him, so I can't tell you anything more about it.

  7. I've got the radio and the TV synched up, and I'm ready to go. I endorse the RTS-200C RadioTVSync from Motron Electronics. It's an amazing product.

  8. In the top of the first, Ohtani walks, Betts pops out to left, and then Freddie Freeman hits his third home run in three World Series game -- a classic Yankee Stadium blast into the right field seats. Dodgers lead 2-0.

  9. That's all for L.A. It's the Dodgers 2, the Yankees coming to bat.

  10. Buehler walks Torres, but then retires Soto (fly out), Judge (strikeout), and Stanton (groundout). Dodgers lead 2-0 after 1.

    1. Walker Buehler has played well enough in this postseason that he might end up being opening-day starter for the Las Vegas A's in a few seasons.

  11. Dodgers go down 1-2-3 in the top of the 2d. They still lead 2-0.

  12. Yankees cannot score in the 2d, and the Dodgers lead 2-0 after 2.

  13. In the top of the 3d, Edman walks, advances to second on a groundout by Ohtani, and scores on a flare to right by Betts. Great small ball from the Dodgers, and they now lead 3-0.

  14. Schmidt walks Freeman, gets Teoscar Hernandez to pop up, and walks Muncy. That's all for him, and he's finished after 2 2/3 innings. The Dodgers have the bases loaded with two out, and the Yankees are turning to Mark Leiter, Jr.

  15. Leiter gets Smith to tap back to the mound, and the Dodgers leave the bases loaded. They lead 3-0 after 2 1/2 innings.

  16. With two out in the bottom of the 3d, Torres walks again, but Soto can only a hammer a grounder to Freeman, and that ends the inning. Dodgers lead 3-0 after 3.

  17. The top of the 4th started promisingly for the Dodgers with a walk to Lux and a single by Enrique Hernandez that put Lux on 3d. But Lux was tagged out at home trying to score on a squeeze play. Then the Yankees brought in Nestor Cortes, and he struck out Ohtani and got Betts to line out to left. So the Dodgers get no runs, and they still lead 3-0 after 3 1/2.

  18. In the bottom of the 4th, the Yankees started to reach Buehler. Judge flew out to left, but Stanton doubled to left. Chisholm hit a sinking line drive to right -- just like the one Joe Hardy catches in the top of the 9th in "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, " and Mookie Betts made a similar diving catch for the second act. Then Volpe laced a single to left, and Stanton tried to score from second. On Fox, the camera work was fantastic -- you could see Stanton, you could see Teoscar Hernandez picking up the ball in left and throwing it home, and then you could see the ball gaining on and passing Stanton, and finally you could see Will Smith tag Stanton for the third out about one foot from home plate. It was a beautiful play by the Dodgers, who lead 3-0 after 4.

  19. In the top of the 5th, Freeman reaches on an error, but Cortes gets T. Hernandez to line out to center, and then gets Muncy to ground into a 4-3 double play. Dodgers lead 3-0 after 4 1/2.

  20. More great defense from the Dodgers in the bottom of the 5th. An excellent charge and throw by Muncy on a slow bouncer from Trevino, and a running and leaping catch by Betts on a liner to right by Verdugo to end the inning. Dodgers lead 3-0 after 5.

  21. In the top of the 6th, the Dodgers get another run as Lux is hit by a pitch, steals second, and scores on a single by Enrique Hernandez. Dodgers lead 4-0 after 5 1/2.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Buehler is finished for the night. The Dodgers bring in Brusdar Graterol (0-0, 2.45 ERA in 7 appearances) to pitch the bottom of the 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Graterol gets Torres to ground out, but then walks Soto. Judge forces Soto at second, but then Stanton singles to center. So the Yankees have Judge at second and Stanton at first with two outs in the bottom of the 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's all for Graterol, who will be replaced by Alex Vesia (5-4, 1.76 ERA in 67 appearances).

    ReplyDelete
  25. Vesia induces Chisholm to ground to second, and Lux flips to Edman for a force that ends the inning. Dodgers lead 4-0 after 6.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In the top of the 7th, the Dodgers get a single and a walk but can do nothing with them. Dodgers lead 4-0 after 6 1/2.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Former National Daniel Hudson (6-2, 3.00 ERA in 65 appearances) comes in to pitch the bottom of the 7th.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hudson struck out Volpe, allowed a single to Rizzo, and struck out Austin Wells (who was pinch-hitting for Trevino). That was all for Hudson, who was replaced by Anthony Banda. Banda warmed up by walking Verdugo on four pitches, and then struck out Torres to end the inning. The Dodgers lead 4-0 after 7.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Dodgers do nothing in the top of the 8th. They lead 4-0 after 7 1/2.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ryan Brasier (1-0, 3.54 ERA in 29 games) pitches the 8th. He retires Soto on a liner to Betts. He walks Judge. But then he strikes out Stanton and Chisholm to end the inning. Dodgers lead 4-0 after 8.

    ReplyDelete
  31. In the top of the 9th, Ohtani is hit by a pitch, but Betts promptly grounds into a double play. The Dodgers lead 4-0 after 8 1/2.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The Dodgers send out Michael Kopech (6-8, 3.46 ERA in 67 appearances) to pitch the 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  33. With two outs, and Rizzo on second (due to a walk and a wild pitch), Kopech throws a gopher ball to the Yankees' number-9 hitter, and Verdugo's home run cut the Dodger lead to 4-2. But Kopech then induced a ground ball from Gleyber Torres, and Tommy Edman made a great play to get Torres and end the game.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The Dodgers win 4-2, and they lead the Series three games to zero.
