In two of the best games they have played in many years, the Yankees closed out Cleveland in Cleveland. On Friday night, the Yankees went up 6-2 after six, saw Cleveland come back to tie the game with three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth, and then scored two runs more in the top of the ninth to edge Cleveland 8 to 6.
Last night's game was even better. Cleveland led 2-0 after five, only to see Giancarlo Stanton tie the game on a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the sixth. Both bullpens pitched great after that, so the game went to extra innings. Finally, in the top of the 10th, former Washington National Juan Soto blasted a three-run home to put the Yankees on top, and they held on for a 5-2 victory. That meant that New York had won the series, four games to one.
So, for the first time since 2009, the Yankees are going back to the World Series. The 15-year gap between pennants is the longest the Yankees have suffered since the 1910's, matched only by a 15-year gap from 1981 to 1996.
Meanwhile, on Friday the Mets jumped out to an 8-1 lead after three innings, and rolled to an easy 12-6 victory. So the Mets and Dodgers had to fly all the way back to Dodger Stadium, where they will meet tonight. The Dodgers still lead the series three games to two.
So as not to spoil for anyone who is waiting to see who won the NLCS, I won't reveal who won--but I am thrilled to reveal that both of the teams I hoped would advance to the World Series have advanced to the World Series!
