A few comments for this week:
Last year, I went out in Week Fourteen of Survivor Pool because I picked against the Bengals, and they put up a superhuman effort (on the road, with a backup quarterback) to win. This year, I went out in Week One because I picked the Bengals, and they decided to treat their matchup with New England as their fourth exhibition game.
I recently bought a collection of vintage NFL mini pennants to replace a set that I lost about 40 years ago. (Thank you, E-Bay!) In honor of that collection, I have decided that going forward, I will refer to Houston's professional football team as the Oilers.
The Game of the Week will take place on Sunday at 3:25 PM Central in Kansas City, when the Chiefs take on the Bengals. I have no idea where the Bengals are ranked after their atrocious performance on Sunday, and it doesn't matter. The Bengals play the Chiefs in the same spirit that Tennessee plays Kentucky. At the same time, the Chiefs will know that if they can open the season with back-to-back wins over Baltimore and Cincinnati, they will be in a strong position for the post-season -- and the Chiefs are highly motivated to win their third Super Bowl in a row. Right now, the Chiefs are favored by 3 1/2 points. These are the only two franchises in the AFC to reach the Super Bowl since 2018, and I expect a very high-quality game.
The other Game of the Week is at 7:15 P.M. Central on Thursday, as the number-9 Dolphins host the number-8 Bills. It's a huge test for both teams.
Are those the pennants that I lost at the bricks-and-mortar/OG HP? If so, you should bill me for your replacements. I had forgotten about them. Sorry again. #gobigdolphins
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about it.
DeleteMy pre-season picks for week 2. I was expecting a big breakout game for GB this week, but that won't be happening with Jordan Love out. I thought the Browns would have life and I'm down on the Jags, but both teams looked bad in week 1 so who knows what to expect.

That was rough last night. I've actually reached the point where I just want Tua to retire.

For the first time since 2017, the United States has won the Solheim Cup, beating Europe 15 1/2 to 12 1/2 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. Congratulations to the Americans!
ReplyDeleteWashington, which is trying to break a nine-game losing streak, boots a field goal to tie the Giants at 12 early in the third quarter.

ReplyDeleteDetroit 16 - 20 Tampa Bay (end of 3d)

Austin Seibert kicks SEVEN field goals for Washington, and the Football Team finally overcomes Daniel Jones and the Giants, 21 to 18. Here's the data for the QB's:
ReplyDeleteDaniel Jones: 16-28, 178 yards, 2 TD's and 0 INT's (100.0 rating)
Jayden Daniels: 23-29, 226 yards, 0 TD's and 0 INT's (99.1 rating)
The Giants had no place kicker for this game, so they had to go for 2-point conversions every time they scored a touchdown. They scored three touchdowns, and failed on all three 2-point conversions. So their three touchdowns lost out to Washington's seven field goals.
ReplyDeleteI was so happy about this result, for the sake of today's Tony Kornheiser Show episode, but I did think it had to be a tremendous heart-breaker for Giants fans.
DeleteThe Ravens lose at home to the Raiders, and that finishes up a noon set of games that were full of upsets:
ReplyDeleteDallas 19 - 44 New Orleans (F)
Detroit 16 - 20 Tampa Bay (F)
Green Bay 16 - 10 Indianapolis (F)
Tennessee 17 - 24 N.Y. Jets (F)
Minnesota 23 - 17 San Francisco (F)
New England 20 - 23 Seattle (F-OT)
Washington 21 - 18 N.Y. Giants (F)
Carolina 3 - 26 San Diego (F)
Jacksonville 13 - 18 Cleveland (F)
Baltimore 23 - 26 Oakland (F)
New Orleans' 44-19 victory was Scorigami.
DeleteI'm doing Red Zone for the first time this season, and that 10-game noon lineup was something. The Red Zone guy said it would be the busiest block of the entire Red Zone season, and it was almost too much with all of the back and forth from snap to snap around the league. But I hung in there and enjoyed it a great deal. Of these results, I was most happy for Washington's and Seattle's wins and least happy for the Jets'.
DeleteChiefs and Bills fans are the only ones who can truly appreciate the Bengals, because Cincinnati just doesn't play like this against anyone else.
ReplyDeleteLast five meetings between the Chiefs and the Bengals:
ReplyDelete01/02/22: Cincinnati 34 - 31 Kansas City
01/30/22: Kansas City 24 - 27 Cincinnati (OT) (AFC Championship)
12/04/22: Cincinnati 27 - 24 Kansas City
01/29/23: Kansas City 23 - 20 Cincinnati (AFC Championship)
12/31/23: Kansas City 25 - 17 Cincinnati
Halftime:
ReplyDeleteJoe Burrow: 13-21, 140 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT's (Rating of 97.3)
Patrick Mahomes: 10-13, 93 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT (Rating of 89.6)
This Chiefs/Bengals football game is what football fans have in mind when they talk about how much they like football.
ReplyDeleteFinal stats:
ReplyDeleteJoe Burrow: 23-36, 258 yds, 2 TD's, 0 INT's (rating of 103.7)
Patrick Mahomes: 18-25, 151 yds, 2 TD's, 2 INT's (rating of 80.6)
Congratulations, GoHeath!
DeleteSo far, six teams ranked in the top ten have lost this week. Texans and Eagles still to play.
ReplyDeleteI have not yet bought into the new kickoff system.
ReplyDeleteNow we have the Oilers and the Bears on Sunday Night Football from Houston. I watched Hard Knocks, so I feel like an expert on the Bears.
ReplyDeleteWashington is now 214-300-3 in the regular season since I moved to the DC area.
ReplyDeleteAFC North Standings:
ReplyDeletePittsburgh: 2-0
Cleveland: 1-1
Cincinnati: 0-2
Baltimore: 0-2
Predictions this week are 9-6 with 1 game left. But it is not looking good for the scenario I had built out for the season.
ReplyDeleteThrough two games:
ReplyDeleteCaleb Williams: 37-66, 267 yds, 0 TD's, 2 INT's (Rating of 53.0)
Jayden Daniels: 40-53, 410 yds, 0 TD's, 0 INT's (Rating of 97.2)
