Month of MLB

Here are the 12 teams, with seedings, that made the MLB playoffs this year:

National League:
1.  Los Angeles:  98-64
2.  Philadelphia:  95-67
3.  Milwaukee:  93-69
4.  San Diego:  93-69
5.  Atlanta:  89-73
6.  New York:  89-73

American League:
1.  New York:  94-68
2.  Cleveland:  92-69
3.  Baltimore:  91-71
4.  Houston:  88-73
5.  Kansas City:  86-76
6.  Detroit:  86-76

The Texas Rangers didn't do much to defend their title, going a mere 78-84 and never seriously threatening to make the playoffs.  But Bruce Bochy's Giants always missed the playoffs the year after they won the World Series, and then they usually came roaring back the next season, so we'll have to watch out for the 2025 Rangers.  In the meantime, we have a bunch of familiar faces, with Kansas City and Detroit as the lone surprises.

As usual, we will cover the playoffs in some detail.  However, I'm out of pocket for the rest of this week, so we'll skip the Wild Card Round, which is usually a good idea anyway.  We'll see you when the Divisional Series begin on Saturday.

  1. The White Sox set a record with 121 losses, or one more loss than the 1962 Mets. However, the 1962 Mets went 40-120, while the ChiSox went 41-121, so the Mets sill hold the record for worst winning percentage.

  2. The Nats finished 71-91 for the second year in a row.

  3. Five teams from the old AL East -- the Yankees, the Orioles, the Tigers, the Brewers, and Cleveland -- all made the playoffs. Four teams from the old NL West -- the Dodgers, Astros, Padres, and Braves -- are in the playoffs.

  4. That leaves one team from the old AL West (Kansas City) and two teams from the old NL East (Philadelphia and the Mets).

  5. If we still had the old divisions, the NLCS would have been the Dodgers and the Phillies, and the ALCS would have been the Yankees and Royals -- just like when I was a kid.

  6. I saw a thing yesterday on social media that listed the artist of the year from some music group--the American Music Awards maybe, something like that--in the last year each team won the World Series. The artist of the year when the A's last won the World Series was New Kids on the Block; for the Tigers, it was Lionel Richie. And for Cleveland, it was Margaret Whiting. Those are the only ones I remember.
