Tennessee Royalty

In case you wondered who calls the tune in Big Orange Country, the following men are all seated in the same box in Omaha for the last game of the College World Series:  Rick Barnes, Peyton Manning, Josh Heupel, and Morgan Wallen.

  1. For the first time since 2019, they are playing Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals. The NBA hasn't had a Game Seven since 2016.

    1. I flipped back and forth between the CWS and the Stanley Cup and probably saw a total of about 25 percent of each goal. Oddly, I saw live the game-winning goal in the hockey, and I saw live this signature play in the baseball. It's funny how often that sort of thing happens where you watch just a little but end up seeing the big thing.

  2. With two out in the bottom of the 7th, Dylan Dreiling of Hays, Kan. lofts a long fly ball that just clears the fence in right field. It's Dreiling's third home run in three games against A & M. It came off of A & M's best relief pitcher, who had to throw 48 pitches on Saturday Night because the other Aggies couldn't guard a 9-2 lead in the seventh. It's a two-run blast that puts the Vols up 5-1, and effectively ends the 2023-24 sports year.

  3. Vandy first won the CWS in 2014. Three years later, the Vols hired Tony Vitello, and tonight he has won it all. It is one of the best coaching jobs I have ever seen.

  4. Vitello is an absolutely dominant presence in every game, and the Vols reflect his personality. In my lifetime, only three coaches at Tennessee have really gotten that place: Pat Summit, Philip Fulmer, and Vitello. Significantly, Summit and Fulmer were both native Tennesseans. Vitello grew up in St. Louis, but I have not seen anyone since Summit who really captures the way UT sports are supposed to work.

  5. A & M really wanted to win this tournament. But UT had to win it, and that's been the difference.

  6. The Aggies actually played much better after they fell way behind. After 7 innings, they were down 6-1, and they had scored only two runs in the last two days. But they put up two runs in the 8th, and two more in the 9th, before losing 6 to 5.

  7. Tennessee becomes the first overall Number One seed to win the CWS since 1999.

  8. And now the Texas A & M coach is leaving to become the coach at the University of Texas. That's just awful.
