Since weather prevented UK and Florida from playing their elimination game last night, today will see a triple-header in Omaha:
Game 10: (2) Kentucky v. Florida, 10 A.M. Central (ESPN)
Game 11: (8) Florida St. v. (1) Tennessee, 2 P.M. Central (ESPN)
Game 12: Winner of Game 10 v. (3) Texas A & M, 6 P.M. Central (ESPN)
Kentucky takes an early 1-0 lead, and then gives up SEVEN runs in the bottom of the 1st. The Cats trail 7-1 after one, and their fans can probably go back to planning for basketball season.
ReplyDeleteIf there's anything UK fans know about, it's losing to lower-seeded teams from the SEC when UK has a chance to reach the Final Four.
ReplyDeleteUF now leads 9-1 after 3. This reminds me of the time Heath's girls team went to the state basketball tournament.
ReplyDeleteI just looked this up. It was March 1980. Heath won the first game, beating Paris 59-46. That ran Heath's record to 27-1, and put the Lady Pirates in the State Quarterfinals.
DeleteThe school was in a frenzy. The game was going to be played on Friday afternoon, and school basically stopped so everyone could follow the game. Heath was playing Franklin County.
DeleteAt halftime, Franklin Co. was ahead 43 to 10.
DeleteThe Final Score was 61 to 44, but I don't think very many of us followed the second half.
DeleteFranklin Co. went all the way to the final, where they were beaten by Louisville Butler.
DeleteUF leads 9-2 after 3 1/2.
ReplyDeleteUK gets a two-run homer, and UF leads 9-4 after 4 1/2.
ReplyDeleteAfter 6 1/2, UF leads 15 to 4.
ReplyDeleteIn the regular season, UK went 22-8 in SEC play, while Florida went 13-17. But today, the Gators drubbed Kentucky 15 to 4, and the overall number-2 seed is eliminated.
ReplyDeleteThe Cats won their first game in Omaha, 5 to 4 in 10 innings. But in their next two games -- against A & M and UF -- they were outscored 20 to 5, and they are done for the year.
ReplyDeleteSo here's where it stands:
ReplyDeleteIn Bracket A, Florida State has to beat Tennessee twice, while Tennessee only needs to win once.
In Bracket B, Florida has to beat Texas A & M twice, while Texas A & M only needs to win once.
And that's it. Every other fan base in college sports is waiting for football season.
DeleteTennessee leads FSU 4-0 after 3.
ReplyDeleteDown 6-0 in the bottom of the 7th, the Noles hit back-to-back homers to make it 6-2. At this point, the Vols pull their starter and go to the bullpen.
ReplyDeleteStill 6-2 after 7. Vols on the verge of playing for the National Championship.
ReplyDeleteTennessee hasn't played for the national championship in a major sport since the Vols' softball team lost in the finals of the Women's CWS back in 2013.
DeleteTennessee rolls to a 7-2 victory, and the Vols will play for the title.
ReplyDeleteThis was FSU's 24th appearance in Omaha -- only Miami (Fla.) and Texas have been there more often. Amazingly, the Seminoles have never won the national championship.
ReplyDeleteSo now we have the nightcap: Texas A & M v. Florida.
ReplyDeleteWe've reached the stage in the College World Series where teams are starting to run out of pitching. UK gave up 15 runs this morning. And now Florida's starting pitcher walks four out of the first five TAMU batters. That puts the Aggies up 1-0 and leaves the bases loaded with only one out. The Gators are forced to change pitchers in the first inning on a day where they've already played one full game.
ReplyDeleteFlorida gives up one more run on a sacrifice fly, and the Aggies get 2 runs on no hits. After half an inning, it's the Aggies 2, the Gators coming up to bat.
ReplyDeleteTAMU tacks on another run with two doubles, and the Aggies lead 3-0 after 4 1/2 innings. Florida appears to be out of runs -- they may have spent too much time on the base paths earlier today.
ReplyDeleteStill 3-0 after 5. Tennessee and Texas A & M did not meet during the regular season or the SEC Tournament.
ReplyDeleteThe Aggies whack a two-run homer to go up 5-0 in the top of the 6th. At no point in any of these games as there been any drama. In each game, the winning team jumped out to an early lead, and then saw that lead get bigger and bigger as the game went on.
ReplyDeleteOne thing is for sure: Tennessee and TAMU have been on a different level from everyone else since the Tournament began. It's only fitting that they should play for the title.
ReplyDeleteA & M has not run out of pitching. They dominate the Gators, shutting them out on four hits and beating them 6-0. Both UT and TAMU make it through the Bracket Stage without losing a game and they will meet in the final.
ReplyDeleteFlorida scored 15 runs over two games today -- but all 15 runs came in one game.
ReplyDeleteTexas A & M has famously not won any national championship in a men's sport since 1939. But in recent years the CWS has been won by South Carolina, Vandy, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State -- so it's the perfect place to break that sort of streak.
ReplyDeleteI am rooting for Texas A&M.
