Tonight, Tennessee and Texas A & M begin the last championship of the 2023-24 season, as they will play best two out of three for the NCAA Baseball Championship. The game starts at 6:30 PM Central.
As usual, I am ready for a two-month break after the College World Series. I feel like the classrooms have all been packed up, most of the kids are gone for the summer, and we just have this one final ceremony to get through before we head for the lake.
2023 World Series: Texas Rangers 2023 College Football Champion: Michigan Wolverines Super Bowl LVIII: Kansas City Chiefs 2024 Men's College Basketball Champion: Connecticut Huskies 2024 Women's College Basketball Champion: S. Carolina Gamecocks 2024 College Softball Champion: Oklahoma Sooners 2024 NBA Champion: Boston Celtics 2024 College Baseball Champion: ????????
1. Kansas City Chiefs over Buffalo Bills (AFC Playoffs) 2. Kansas City Chiefs over San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowl) 3. Michigan over Alabama (Rose Bowl) 4. Iowa over UConn (Women's Final Four) 5. Washington over Texas (Sugar Bowl)
In the last few years, the games between the Chiefs, the Bills, and the Bengals have been every bit as good as the games in the 1970's between the Dolphins, Steelers, and Raiders, or the games in the 1980's between the 49ers, Redskins, and Giants.
I really wish we had a Steve Sabol to record these epics between the Chiefs, the Bills, and the Bengals. They are some of the greatest football games ever played.
Anyway, we close with two of the angriest and most desperate fanbases in all of sports. Normally, I feel like everyone who makes it this far in the College World Series is pretty happy to still be playing this late in the year. But whoever loses this series between UT and TAMU will be bitter for years to come.
Here we go. Gavin Grahovac, a 3d baseman from Orange, Calif., steps up to the plate and hits the first pitch of the game over the right field fence. Texas A & M leads 1-0.
With one out in the first, TAMU gets a double. Then an error puts runners on first and third. That's all for Chris Stamos, the starting pitcher. Tony Vitello, the Bobby Knight of college baseball, has seen enough. The Vols are going to A.J. Causey, a right handed junior from Harvest, Ala.
I will make only one prediction. If TAMU wins the National Championship, at some point between now and Monday night either: (1) Vitello will be ejected from a game, or (2) there will be a fight.
Both teams wearing their good uniforms tonight. TAMU, as the visitors, are in gray uniforms with maroon caps, lettering and numerals. Tennessee is in all white with orange hats, lettering, and numerals. They look great.
A & M puts up a five-spot in the top of the third, thanks to a UT error and a series of timely hits. The Aggies now lead 7-1 after 2 1/2. But remember that in their first game of the CWS, against Florida State, the Vols trailed 9-4 before storming back with four runs in the bottom of the 9th for a 12-11 win.
Tennessee uses three more singles to get another run in the bottom of the 3d. The Vols have six singles and two runs. They still trail 7-2 after three.
Now he's doing "Thunder Road." My goodness. In September 1979, you could go to Madison Square Garden and listen to this concert. And then, in May 1980, you could go to the movies and watch "The Empire Strikes Back."
On July 8, 2000, I stayed at a Borders until midnight (with a whole bunch of other people) to buy a copy of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." I think that for me, that was the last great moment in pop culture. But to be fair, I don't think anyone should have a lot of great moments in pop culture after they turn 35. It is, or it should be, a young person's game.
In the top of the 7th, Kaeden Kent -- a sophomore who went to Lake Travis H.S. in Austin, Tex. -- wafts a home run over the right field fence, and the Aggies are up 9-2.
In the bottom of the 7th, Dylan Dreiling -- the Vols' cleanup hitter, a sophomore from Hays, Kan. -- hits a two-run homer just beyond the reach of the right fielder, and the score is now 9-4. By the way, they've been playing for over three hours and they still haven't completed seven innings. It takes a long time to beat the Vols.
The Aggies change pitchers, but Hunter Ensley (a redshirt junior from Huntingdon, Tenn.) blasts an enormous homer into the bullpen in left, and the score is now 9-5. So the Aggies are going to change pitchers again.
Well, I've given them almost four hours, and they still haven't finished this game. Aggies lead 9-5 with two outs in the top of the 9th. That's all for me. I'll be back for Game Two at 1 P.M. Central tomorrow.

Yesterday in 1977, the Texas Rangers' new manager, Eddie Stanky, resigned one day after being named to follow the fired Frank Lucchesi.

ReplyDeleteQuarterback was pretty great.

ReplyDeleteA & M gets one more hit, and the Aggies lead 2-0 after the first half inning.

ReplyDeleteI'm listening to Springsteen's "No Nukes" concert from 1979. Here's how he opened on September 21, 1979 in Madison Square Garden.
ReplyDelete1. Prove It All Night
2. Badlands
3. The Promised Land
And then, he says, I'm going to play a new song. And the new song turns out to be: "The River."
It's unbelievable. It's like watching Tiger play golf in 2000 or watching Michael Jordan play basketball in 1992.
Now he's doing "Thunder Road." My goodness. In September 1979, you could go to Madison Square Garden and listen to this concert. And then, in May 1980, you could go to the movies and watch "The Empire Strikes Back."

ReplyDeleteNow he's doing "Jungleland." Honestly, he could have just done this song and it would have been a memorable experience.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 7th, Kaeden Kent -- a sophomore who went to Lake Travis H.S. in Austin, Tex. -- wafts a home run over the right field fence, and the Aggies are up 9-2.

ReplyDeleteThe Aggies go to Evan Aschenbeck, a senior from Brenham H.S. in Brenham, Tex.
ReplyDeleteAschenbeck strikes out the next two Vols to end the inning. My advice to the Aggies is to score about 10 runs in the top of the 8th.
ReplyDeleteWell, I've given them almost four hours, and they still haven't finished this game. Aggies lead 9-5 with two outs in the top of the 9th. That's all for me. I'll be back for Game Two at 1 P.M. Central tomorrow.
