War Productions @warprodlive Boys Basketball - Harlan County 29 Warren Central 23 - 2:03 2nd. Dragons cut it to two briefly, but Harlan County scored back to back layups. 10:31 AM · Mar 21, 2024
Vaughts' Views @vaughtsviews got a good one here as Harlan County leads Warren Central 32-28 at halftime. Kade Unseld 12 points in 2nd quarter for WC and @trentnoah2_ has 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists for Harlan County. 10:37 AM · Mar 21, 2024
With 4:07 left, Harlan Co. leads 57 to 54, but Warren Central is on a 10-0 run. But then Noah hits a three-pointer. That's 32 points for him, and Harlan Co. leads 60-54.
Noah hits another three-pointer to put Harlan Co. up 63 to 57. Warren Central misses at the other end, and with 40 seconds left, it should be just free throws from here.
In two games against Kentucky, Mississippi State went 20-52 from three-point range. So far today, they are 1-6, and they trail Michigan State 20 to 11.
In each of their last four appearances at Rupp Arena, the Warren Central Dragons at least made the semi-finals. This is the first time the Fourth Region Champion has gone out in the first round since 2013.
Michigan State leads Mississippi State 31 to 24 at the half. Watching how difficult it is for Mississippi State to score against the Spartans, you can tell just how bad UK's defense really is.
When they played Kentucky a few weeks ago, Mississippi State scored 14 points in the last minute of the game. Today, they only scored 24 points in the first half.
This is a pathetic effort by Mississippi State. Down 41 to 29 with 15:43 left. Getting outrebounded 20 to 10. They haven't shot a single free throw. They didn't come close to bringing the type of energy you need to go up against Michigan State.
I hope, one time in my life, that Mississippi State comes out as flat against Kentucky as it did in this game. Sparty leads 66 to 51 with 3:49 left, and the game has never been that close. The Bulldogs are 6 of 24 from three-point range.
On KHSAA Radio, they are interviewing the reporter from the Bowling Green Daily News. He has readers in Warren County and in Butler County, so he is very busy today.
Evangel Christian rolls over Butler Co. 71 to 60. Here's a weird stat: since 2009, Third Region Champions have won a total of four games in the State Tournament. All four of those wins took place in 2015, when Owensboro won the State Championship. In every other season since 2009, the Third Region champ has gone out in the First Round.
While we hang out in Lexington, waiting for the six o'clock tipoff of the evening session, here are the scores from the NCAA's (higher seed listed first):
Mississippi St. 51 - 69 Michigan St. Brigham Young 67 - 71 Duquesne Creighton 77 - 60 Akron
It's amazing how many dull college basketball games there are. Every UK game is a thriller. After watching UK all year, I'm genuinely surprised to see teams missing three-point shots.
Oakland has a guy on the roster who made 121 three-point shots this year, and another guy who made 83. Can you imagine how amped up they must be for this game?
After watching what happened to Mississippi State, I'm not surprised to see South Carolina trailing Oregon, 34 to 29 at the half. In the SEC, teams like Mississippi State and South Carolina can win a decent number of games with sheer violence. But they don't usually tolerate that sort of thing in the NCAA Tournament.
Honestly, it feels like the tournament isn't really going to kick off until UK takes the floor tonight. College basketball is a lot more boring when teams play defense.
Oregon is up 40 to 34 on South Carolina, and the game just looks out of reach for the Gamecocks. Without their usual violent tactics, they are just a lot of guys who just aren't very good at basketball. They can't shoot, they can't dribble, they don't know where to position themselves for rebounds, and they can't stop Oregon from going wherever it wants with the ball.
Just absolute dominance by the Ducks. The Gamecocks are 6-20 from two-point range, while the Ducks are 17-23.
And Oregon's not even good. Ken Pom has them at number 55 in the country. But they have a real coach, and they're getting to play under the normal rules of basketball, and that's pretty much all they need.
Morehead played pretty well for about 25 minutes. They were tied 48-all, and then Illinois blew the game open. Still, it was a solid season for the Eagles.
Kentucky was supposed to tip off at 6:10 PM Central, but now they're going to tip off at 6:20 PM. Maybe they wanted to see the end of the Trinity game. Trinity leads 40-37 with 5:05 left.

ReplyDeleteMichigan State crushes Mississippi State 69 to 51. That may be the worst game I've ever seen Mississippi State play.

ReplyDeleteNow 44-34 for Oregon. Carolina literally has a hard time even running an offensive set. They've had the ball stolen twice in a row.

It's been a pretty boring tournament so far, but I have a feeling that's about to change.

ReplyDeleteWe're kicking off the NCAA Tournament viewing experience with George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers playing "Bad to the Bone."
ReplyDeleteKenPom went 6-2 in the early games. He had BYU over Duquesne and South Carolina over Oregon. But he got everything else right.
