Classic SEC

Here are the Classic SEC football standings (based on CBS rankings):

2.  Georgia:  7-0
9.  Alabama:  7-1
12.  Mississippi:  6-1
15.  Louisiana St:  6-2
22.  Tennessee:  5-2
25.  Florida:  5-2
31.  Kentucky:  5-2
56.  Mississippi St:  4-3
57.  Auburn:  3-4
99.  Vanderbilt:  2-6

Here are the leaders of the other classic conferences:

ACC:  N. Carolina (18) (6-1)
Big 10:  Michigan (1) (8-0)
Big 8:  Oklahoma (6) (7-0)
Southwest:  Texas (8) (6-1)
Pac 10:  Washington (4) (7-0)
Western Athletic:  Utah (13) (6-1)

In the ACC, Duke is number 19, only one spot behind UNC.  So the ACC will probably come down to the Duke/UNC game in Chapel Hill on November 11.

In the Big 10, Ohio St. is number 3.  So that conference, as usual, will come down to the OSU/Michigan game in Ann Arbor on November 25.

In the Big 8, the only potential challenge to Oklahoma is Missouri, who is ranked number 16 with a record of 7-1.

In the Southwest, the second-place team is Texas A & M at number 34, so no one is catching Texas.

In the Pac 10, Washington is being chased by Oregon (7) (6-1) and Oregon St. (11) (6-1).  The Huskies have already beaten Oregon, and they play at Oregon St. on November 18.  By the way, the Huskies still hold the Unofficial College Football Championship after they pulled out a 15-7 win over Arizona St. last week.

In the WAC, Air Force (17) (7-0) is making a surprising challenge to the Utes.

Here are the projected classic bowl games:

Rose:  (1) Michigan v. (4) Washington
Sugar:  (2) Georgia v. (3) Ohio St.
Orange:  (6) Oklahoma v. (5) Florida St.
Cotton:  (8) Texas v. (9) Alabama
Fiesta:  (7) Oregon v. (14) Notre Dame

(13) Utah would get (10) Penn St. in the Holiday Bowl.

  1. I will not pay any attention to any stories about any of UK's mysterious big men as we approach college basketball season. We've been down this road before, and the answer is always, "Oh, it turns out that person isn't going to play after all."

  2. This is the first time I've really missed Jerry Tipton. If he were still covering UK basketball, he would write a bunch of pieces implying that Cal is simply not telling the truth about the eligibility of UK's big men. Those pieces would provoke Cal into giving us more information, and would probably also provoke him into avoiding situations where he's stuck with guys who don't play. I don't think it's a coincidence that UK was better when Tipton was needling Cal every day.
