This is a hectic day, so we won't have as much to say as we did yesterday. The first game is Louisville Male v. Breathitt County, and Male leads 54-27 at the half. So I think we can assume that Male will be moving on.
There's been a "Breathitt County High School" since at least 1927, so it may have been the first high school in the county.
Male was established in 1856, when it was known simply as the High School. That's why Male still uses the "H" in its logo.
Male made 9-18 three-pointers in the first half. I don't think UK has shot that well in many years.
ReplyDeleteCalvert City's WCCK 95.7 FM has the Lyon County-centric broadcast of today's second game.
ReplyDeleteWCCK broadcasts a classic country music format to the Paducah, Kentucky, area.[3] In addition to its usual music programming, WCCK was previously an affiliate of the Tennessee Titans football radio network, a distinction now held by sister station WCBL.[4] and the University of Louisville Cardinals athletics network.[5]
DeleteStice Communications received the original construction permit for a new FM radio station from the Federal Communications Commission on March 5, 1993.[6] The new station was assigned the call letters WCCK by the FCC on May 14, 1993.[7] WCCK received its license to cover from the FCC on January 10, 1994.[8]
In May 2000, Stice Communications, Inc., reached an agreement to sell this station to Freeland Broadcasting. The deal was approved by the FCC on July 11, 2000, and the transaction was consummated on July 31, 2000.[9]
The WCCK call letters were originally assigned to 103.7 (top 40 "K-104") In Erie, PA, in the late 1960s, until the early 1990s when the call letters were changed to WMXE, now WRTS (STAR-104) which plays top 40 format.
WCCK reports that the lower bowl of Rupp Arena is full.
ReplyDelete"Lyon brought the whole county."
ReplyDeleteMale won 94-59.
ReplyDeleteNext up, we have the number-8 Lyon County Lyons (30-5), champions of the 2d Region, against the Newport Wildcats (28-6), champions of the 9th Region.
ReplyDeleteNewport is on a 12-game winning streak. Lyon County is on a 16-game winning streak.
ReplyDeleteTrailing by six, Newport had a possession about midway through the second half in which they kept the ball through four missed shots--offensive rebounds, Lyon County turnovers, etc. That triggered a 7-0 run.
ReplyDeleteLyon County coach--Travis Perry's dad--called timeout. Now I don't want to brag, but I got to go to the Second Region championship in which Lyon County outlasted rugged Hopkinsville to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. I'm pretty certain that Lyons coach Perry called three timeouts in that game and that Lyon County scored on all three of its ensuing possessions.
In this game, Lyon County came out of the timeout and scored and then finished the first half on a 9-2 run. It's 26-20, Lyons, in Rupp Arena, and WCCK's broadcast is out of sight!
Lyon County is wearing white uniforms with yellow numerals, and the words "LYON COUNTY" across their chests.
ReplyDeleteWith 22.2 seconds left in the 2d quarter, Lyon County leads 24-20.
ReplyDeleteLyon County was formed in 1947 by merging the Eddyville Tigers with the Kuttawa Lions.
ReplyDeleteLyon County stats at half
ReplyDelete6-15 from 2-point range (40.0 percent)
4-9 from 3-point range (44.4 percent)
2-2 from the line (100 percent)
17 rebounds, 5 turnovers
Newport stats at half
ReplyDelete6-14 from 2-point range (42.9 percent)
2-9 from 3-point range (22.2 percent)
2-3 from the line (66.7 percent)
12 rebounds, 4 turnovers
Newport has contested this tournament every year since 1919.
ReplyDeleteEric's feed is ahead of mine, so I'm going to defer to him on the remaining play-by-play.
ReplyDeleteThanks to the magic of Paramount Plus, I can watch the NCAA Tournament on KFVS-TV, Channel 12. With 3:30 left in the game, Maryland has a 61-59 lead on West Virginia.
ReplyDeleteNewport is wearing red uniforms with white numerals and black trim. Their jerseys say "NEWPORT."
ReplyDelete35-27, Lyon County, with a media timeout at under three minutes to go in the third quarter ...
ReplyDeleteGoHeath, sorry for getting ahead of you here. I'm getting on another call now for an hour, so I'll be shut up for the remainder of this game if you care to take back the talking stick. Go, Lyons!
Furman leads UVA 56-54 with 5:02 left in the game.
ReplyDeleteBetween the third and fourth quarters, the Lyon County cheerleaders win the combination push a small car / build a pyramid out of plastic cups competition. And yes, it's as odd as it sounds.
ReplyDeleteMaryland beats West Virginia 67-65.
ReplyDeleteBoth President Obama and I got this one wrong.
DeleteWith 3:48 left in the game, Travis Perry makes a free throw to give Lyon County a 53-37 lead. He also passes "King" Kelly to become the all-time leading scorer in the history of the KHSAA. And he's a junior. All over the lower bowl of Rupp, Lyon County fans are holding up their phones to take pictures.
ReplyDeleteFurman upsets UVA, 68 to 67.
ReplyDeleteLyon County wins, 61 to 46. Perry finishes with 23 points and the record.
ReplyDeleteThe next game up for KFVS is Alabama v. Texas A & M - Corpus Christi.
ReplyDeleteUVA's last few seasons:
ReplyDelete2018: 31-2, number 1 seed, lost to UMBC 74-54 in the first round
2019: 29-3, number 1 seed, WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
2020: 23-7, no tournament
2021: 18-6, number 4 seed, lost to Ohio 62-58 in the first round
2022: 19-13, went to the NIT
2023: 25-7, number 4 seed, lost to Furman 68-67 in the first round
Cameron Mills draws his third blowout in a row. At the half, Lex. Frederick Douglass is beating Martin County, 45 to 20.
ReplyDeleteThis means that tomorrow, Lex. Frederick Douglass will play Lou. Male in one of the games of the year.
ReplyDeleteSo far, so good for the SEC:
ReplyDeleteAlabama 96, TAMCC 75
Arkansas 73, Illinois 63
Missouri 76, Utah St. 65
UVA is no longer the upset of the day, as Princeton (a number-15 seed) knocks off Arizona (ranked number 8 in the AP poll), 59 to 55.
ReplyDeleteWith 1:34 left in the third period, Douglass leads Martin Co., 58-32.
ReplyDeleteTonight the SEC has Auburn facing Iowa, and Tennessee facing Louisiana-Lafayette, or, as I prefer, Southwestern Louisiana.
ReplyDeleteI'm back on KFVS, but I don't yet know what game I'm going to get.
ReplyDeleteTo me, this feels like the first real NCAA Tournament since 2019.
ReplyDeleteKFVS has Duke v. Oral Roberts, from Orlando. I think I say this every year, but I really dislike having every one of these courts be the same. For me, part of the fun of the tournament was seeing the different courts across the country.
ReplyDeleteAye.
DeleteI'm sick of branding. I might just start making choices based on how committed a product or organization is to brand fidelity. The more serious you are about that stuff, the less inclined I'm going to be to support you.
DeleteI just realized that KFVS is showing the same games as WUSA Channel 9 in Washington, because CBS doesn't organize the games by region -- it organizes them by channel. Duke/Oral Roberts is a CBS game, so every CBS station is carrying it. Auburn/Iowa is a TNT game, and everyone watching TNT gets that game, no matter where they are.
ReplyDeleteI discovered this yesterday, too, and I was disappointed. Northern Kentucky was on TNT last night, and I figured they'd get the CBS game so that people without cable could watch the Kentucky team. But I shouldn't be surprised. Nobody ever listens to me.
DeleteNo matter, I'm rolling with CBS. I like the KFVS commercials, anyway.
ReplyDeleteSo far, Ken Pom is 4-4 with his picks. He got Arkansas over Illinois, San Diego St. over Charleston, Alabama over TAMCC, and Kansas over Howard. He had West Virginia by one over Maryland, but Maryland won 67-65. He had Utah St. by three over Mizzou, but Mizzou won 76-65. He had UVA by five over Furman, but Furman won 68-67. And he had Arizona by 13 over Princeton, but Princeton won 59-55.
ReplyDeleteDuke jumps out to an 11-0 lead, and all the folks who picked them to reach the Final Four are feeling good about that pick.
ReplyDeleteDouglass wins 73-53.
ReplyDeleteThe last game of the first round of the KHSAA Boys' Basketball State Tournament will feature the number-4 Geo. Rogers Clark Cardinals (27-5), the 10th Region Champions and defending State Champions, taking on the North Laurel Jaguars (25-10), champions of the 13th Region.
ReplyDeleteThe Clark County H.S. Cardinals played basketball as early as 1915. After 1960, they merged with the Winchester Shawnees. The combined school has been known as George Rogers Clark since the fall of 1963.
ReplyDeleteNorth Laurel High School opened in 1992 when Laurel County was split into North Laurel and South Laurel.
ReplyDeleteClark County won the State Title in 1951, and GRC won it in 2022. Laurel County won the State Title in 1982.
ReplyDeleteWith 2:37 left in the first quarter, GRC leads 12-3.
ReplyDeleteNorth Laurel is wearing blue uniforms with green numerals and letters and white trim. Their jerseys say "NORTH" above the numeral and "LAUREL" below.
ReplyDeleteGRC has white uniforms with black numerals and red trim, with the word "Cards" in cursive on their chests.
ReplyDeleteGive credit to North Laurel for coming up with a unique color scheme. On the other hand, red and black teams known as the Cardinals have a long and proud history in the Commonwealth.
ReplyDeleteGRC leads 18-5 after one quarter.
ReplyDeleteReed Sheppard has now scored 16 points in the game, and 13 points in the quarter, as North Laurel has come to life. But GRC is still in the lead, 27 to 20 with 1:02 left in the half.
ReplyDeleteDuke rolls, 74-51.
ReplyDeleteAuburn beats Iowa, 83 to 75,and the SEC is 2-0 against the Big 10 today.
ReplyDeleteKen Pom moves to 6-4 on the day.
DeleteK-Pom finished 10-6.
DeleteAt halftime, my Southland Farmer Dairy Families are still pushing chocolate milk.
ReplyDeleteAccording to its webpage, "The Southwest and Southland Dairy Farmers is an alliance of dairy farmers from Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri, Arizona, Oklahoma, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina."
ReplyDeleteI've found farming to be one of the more curious industries. There's a whole culture of both formal alliances ("Silver-tier Member of the Southland Farmer Dairy Families Inc." or whatever) and informal clumping ("we're farmers, and you aren't"), but there's also incredibly fierce conflict within the group. I gather that farmers'-markets planning meetings are the place you want to go if you're looking for the best likelihood to see metal folding chairs flung across a room in your municipal building. Farmers are the early 1970s Oakland A's but not so comedically self-aware.
DeleteNorth Laurel has Reed Sheppard, but GRC has Jerone Morton, a 6' 4" senior who is going to Morehead State. They've got a good one, as he has 13 points. GRC leads 38-25 with 4:39 left in the 3d.
ReplyDeleteWith 2:49 left in the 3d, GRC leads 44-28. They are really good, although I think Lyon County will present a stiffer test than North Laurel.
ReplyDeleteAssuming this result holds, the quarter-finals will look like this:
ReplyDeleteElizabethtown v. Woodford Co.
(1) Warren Cent. v. Ashland
(8) Lex. Fred. Douglass v. Lou. Male
(9) Lyon Co. v. (4) Geo. Rogers Clark
North Laurel wanted to do better on the boards, but GRC shot the lights out in the 3d quarter, scoring 24 points and building a 53-38 lead with 8 minutes to go.
ReplyDeleteI'm very confident that Warren Central will be in the final, but I have no idea who is coming out of the lower bracket.
ReplyDeleteJason Frakes reports that 14,734 patrons showed up for tonight's session at the Boys' State Tournament.
ReplyDeleteWith 2:26 left, North Laurel closes to within 57-50, but the Jaguars commit a turnover. The North Laurel fans thought GRC should have been called for a foul, and they are making their displeasure known.
ReplyDeleteThey had over 13,000 for the Lyon County game this afternoon. Just great support from the fans.
ReplyDeleteGRC holds on for a 62-54 win. Sheppard had 23 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. But Morton had 19 points, and GRC went 6-13 from 3-point range.
