If the NCAA Were Regions

OK, you should know how this works by now:

1st:  Connecticut (6 on Ken Pom)
2d:  Iona (77)
3d:  Rutgers (26)
4th:  Virginia (14)
5th:  N. Carolina (38)
6th:  Alabama (2), Auburn (18)
7th: Arkansas (20)
8th: Tennessee (5)
9th:  W. Virginia (21)
10th:  Purdue (4), Indiana (19)
11th:  Marquette (11), Iowa St. (17)
12th:  Kansas (8), Creighton (12)
13th:  Houston (1), Texas (9), Baylor (10)
14th:  Arizona (13)
15th:  Gonzaga (15)
16th:  UCLA (3), Saint Mary's (7), San Diego St. (16)

It's amazing to me how badly the first five regions are doing.  And the Eighth Region, which is usually hotly contested, is basically a walkover for Tennessee.  The second-best team in the Region is Memphis, who are ranked number 35.

Anyway, we just got the draw for the KHSAA Sweet 16.  Using that draw and the list above, we get the following matchups in the round of 16:

N. Carolina v. Connecticut
Alabama v. Tennessee
Virginia v. Kansas
Rutgers v. UCLA
Marquette v. Gonzaga
Arkansas v. Arizona
Iona v. W. Virginia
Purdue v. Houston

That's a really entertaining set of games.

  12. Iona! I always have had a bad feeling about those people because of Chuck Aleksinas, but then I finally looked up Chuck Aleksinas this morning and saw that he transferred to UConn, not Iona! That's more than four decades of misplaced anger on my part.

  14. I rewatched a lot of this game this afternoon with my mother- and father-in-law. It was great. It's a lot more fun to watch Kentucky games when you know they're going to win.
