Usually the Finals games are all played at night, but for some reason this game is starting at 2 P.M. Central. If Ole Miss wins, it will be the last game of the year.
On the radio, they say that 80 percent of the crowd is rooting for Ole Miss. Yesterday was the largest crowd for Game One of the finals in eleven years.
In the top of the 6th, with runners on 1st and 3d and one out, OU lays down a bunt. The pitcher throws to first, and the ball hits the runner and skips into the outfield. A run scores, and OU takes a 1-0 lead. But wait! Ole Miss challenges the play, and the challenge is UPHELD! The runner is called out for interference, the score remains 0-0, and there are two out. The next batter flies out, and we are still tied 0-0 after 5 1/2 innings.
In the bottom of the 6th, shortstop Jacob Gonzalez blasts a home run into the right field seats. There will be no review of that hit. Ole Miss leads 1-0.
With two outs in the top of the 7th, OU rallies. Jimmy Crooks doubles down the right field line. Wallace Clark walks. and Jackson Nicklaus hits a high popup that falls just outside the grasp of the Ole Miss shortstop. One run scores and the runners end up on second and third.
Mason Nichols comes in to pitch. Sebastian Orduno comes into pinch hit. Orduno is hit by a pitch. Ole Miss challenges the ruling, and the ruling is affirmed. The bases are loaded with two out. Score tied at 1. The number 9 hitter, Kendall Pettis, comes to the plate.
Nichols was very effective yesterday, but he threw 34 pitches yesterday. Today he was ineffective -- he had a hit batsman and a bases-loaded walk. Probably should not have been in there. John Gaddis comes in to pitch for Ole Miss. 2-1 for the Sooners with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Gaddis falls behind 2-0, but comes back to strike out the OU leadoff hitter on a full count. OU leaves the bases loaded, but the Sooners lead 2-1 after 6 1/2 innings.
In the bottom of the 8th, Horton gets his 13th strikeout, but then gives up a single. OU goes to Trevin Michael to hold the lead. Michael gives up a single to right, another single to right (which ties the game), and then a wild pitch. Suddenly Ole Miss leads 3-2 and the Rebs will be only three outs from the national championship!
Ole Miss entered the tournament as the number-3 seed in the Coral Gables Region. Most observers believe that they were the last at-large team to get a bid.
Orduno strikes out and the game is over! On the radio they say, "The last team in is the last team standing!" Ole Miss beats Oklahoma 10-3 and 4-2, and the Mississippi Rebels are the NCAA baseball champions for 2022.
In recent years, the bottom-dwellers in SEC football have made their mark in baseball. South Carolina won the CWS in 2010 and 2011, Vandy won in 2014 and 2019, Mississippi State won last year, and Ole Miss won this year. Truly it just means more.
For me, an NCAA Baseball Tournament that begins with Tennessee as the overwhelming favorite and ends with Ole Miss taking the title is nothing to complain about.

ReplyDeleteThat pop-up feels like the sort of catch Ole Miss needed to make.
