So it's all down to Oklahoma v. Ole Miss for the championship of college baseball -- the last title of the 2021-22 sports year.
There's a huge crowd in Omaha, with most of the fans rooting for Ole Miss. But Oklahoma has been dominant in Omaha so far.
In the top of the 1st, Ole Miss stages a two-out rally. With two outs, the Rebs put together a single, a wild pitch, a single, a stolen base, another wild pitch, and a flubbed ground ball by the OU shortstop. It's all worth two runs, and the score is Ole Miss 2, Oklahoma coming up to bat.
ReplyDeleteThe 2022-23 sports year will begin with college football on September 3. I'll be watching Georgia v. Oregon and Ohio St. v. Notre Dame on ABC.
ReplyDeleteBy the time we get to early September, I'll be desperate for new sports content. But for now, I've been watching sports for ten months in a row, and I'm ready for some time off.
ReplyDeleteI will watch the British Open at St. Andrews next month. I'm really looking forward to that.
ReplyDeleteTD Ameritrade Park in Omaha has now been renamed as Charles Schwab Field. Now that the name has been changed, I will simply refer to it as Rosenblatt Stadium.
ReplyDeleteOle Miss puts together another two-out rally. A single, another wild pitch (!), and another single makes the score 3-0 after 1 1/2 innings.
ReplyDeleteThis is OU's third trip to the finals. The Sooners won it all in 1951 and 1994. Ole Miss is in the finals for the first time.
ReplyDeleteTim Elko hits an opposite field home run down the right field line -- an aluminum bat special -- and the Rebs lead 4-0 in the top of the 3d.
ReplyDeleteAfter getting no hits through the first five innings, OU starts off the bottom of the 6th with a single to center, a single to right, and a bunt that is thrown away by the third baseman. Ole Miss leads 4-1, but OU has men on 1st and 2d with no one out.
ReplyDeleteWith no one out and the bases loaded, Ole Miss changes pitchers, bringing in Mason Nichols. Nichols strikes out Peyton Graham, the number-2 hitter for OU. then he strikes out Blake Robertson, the number-3 hitter. So it's up to Tanner Tredaway, the Sooner cleanup hitter.
ReplyDeleteTredaway walks, and OU trims Mississippi's lead to 4-2.
ReplyDeleteJimmy Crooks, swinging at the first pitch, taps a grounder back to the pitcher and leaves the bases loaded. Probably should have been more patient there. After six, Ole Miss leads OU 4 to 2.
ReplyDeleteIn the bottom of the 7th, Nichols strikes out the side for Ole Miss. OU has struck out 11 times so far in this game. Ole Miss leads 4-2 heading into the 8th.
ReplyDeleteToday's attendance is 25,813, which pretty much represents a complete sell out at the New Rosenblatt.
ReplyDeleteOle Miss starts off the 8th with back-to-back singles, and the Rebs have a chance to blow the game open.
ReplyDeleteOle Miss tries to bunt, but bunts the ball right back to the pitcher, and there is a force out at third. Rebs have men on first and second with one out.
ReplyDeleteOle Miss tries to steal third, but is thrown out. Two out.
ReplyDeleteBut T.J. McCants, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, whacks a two run homer over the right field fence. Once again, the Rebs score with two out. Ole Miss leads 6-2 in the top of the 8th.
ReplyDeleteAnd now Calvin Harris -- the number-9 hitter -- homers to right center. The Rebs go back-to-back, and Ole Miss leads 7-2.
ReplyDeleteAnd now Justin Bench -- the leadoff hitter -- has hit a THIRD consecutive home run. Ole Miss leads 8-2 with homers from its 8, 9, and 1 hitters.
ReplyDeleteOn Twitter, someone has pointed out that Texas A & M is now the only SEC program that hasn't played for a national title in football, baseball, or men's basketball since 1940.
ReplyDeleteI tried to remember which schools have played for titles in football, baseball, and men's basketball since I became a fan. I remembered the following: Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Georgia Tech. I think that's the complete list.
ReplyDeleteUK is men's basketball only (1975, 78, 96, 98, 2012, and 14). Vandy is baseball only (2014, 15, 19, and 21). Tennessee is football only (1998). Louisville is men's basketball only (1980, 86, and 2013).
ReplyDeleteGoing into the bottom of the 9th, Ole Miss leads 10-3.
ReplyDeleteOle Miss wins 10-3 and leads the series 1-0. The Rebels could win their first title tomorrow.
