Man City was eliminated from the Champions' League in heartbreaking fashion this week, giving up two goals in injury time -- and a third goal in extra time -- to crash out to Real Madrid after they had controlled that tie for 180 minutes. But today, City moved much closer to defending its Premier League title. Liverpool was held to a 1-all draw at home by Tottenham Hotspur, and then City went out and crushed Newcastle Utd 5-0 to scoop up all three points. So with only three games left, City is now in a very strong position:
1. Man City: 27-3-5 (86 points)
2. Liverpool: 25-2-8 (83)
Of course, Liverpool can still win the F.A. Cup and the Champions' League. But the Premier League appears to be slipping from the Reds' grip.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the border, Celtic only needs one point from its last two games to capture the Scottish Premier League:
1. Celtic: 28-3-5 (89 points)
2. Rangers: 25-3-8 (83)
On Tuesday, Liverpool went to Aston Villa and won by 2-1. But on Wednesday, Manchester City crushed Wolves 5-1. So with two games left, the table looks like this:
ReplyDelete1. Man City: 28-3-5 (89 points)
2. Liverpool: 26-2-8 (86)
Liverpool wins the F.A. Cup for the first time since 2006. The final with Chelsea ended in a 0-0 draw, and Liverpool won on penalty kicks by 6 to 5. It was Liverpool's eighth F.A. Cup trophy. Arsenal still has the most F.A. Cup titles with 14.
ReplyDeleteNow we've got some drama in the Premier League, as Manchester City trails West Ham 2-0 on the road at half time.
ReplyDeleteIn the 48th minute, City whangs in a goal to make the score 2-1 for West Ham.
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic stuff. City keeps attacking and attacking -- and then West Ham is looking for a breakaway. The Hammers just had a great chance to go up 3-1, but shot the ball over the net. Still West Ham 2-1 in the 65th minute.
ReplyDeleteAnd there it is! City breaks through in the 68th minute to make the score 2-2. City had a free kick close to the penalty area. A West Ham defender tried to head the ball back to his goalkeeper -- and headed the ball into the net! An own goal! Heartbreak for West Ham and Liverpool, joy for City.
ReplyDeleteCity keeps up the pressure -- although not as frantically. Finally, in the 84th minute City wins a penalty. BUT IT'S SAVED BY THE KEEPER!
ReplyDeleteThe score remains 2-2 in 85th minute. Great effort by the West Ham keeper, who perfectly anticipated the direction of the kick.
ReplyDeleteFour minutes of injury time. Still 2-2.
ReplyDeleteFinal Score: West Ham Utd 2 - 2 Manchester City. City now has 90 points with one game left. Liverpool has 86 with two games left. So if City wins its last game, it will win the title, no matter what Liverpool does.
