I'm behind on a bunch of work stuff, and I'm off college basketball for now, anyway, but I did want to make sure to get this stuff put on the HP, scrapbookstyle ...
I love it that the C-J gave space for a Joe B. contributed article, and I love it that he and UK took the newspaper up on the offer. That's a fun thing to do. It never occurred to me do it at any newspaper I worked for.
If I recall, Dave Kindred (at least, I think it was Dave Kindred) picked IU to win. They probably wanted to make sure that they had at least one article that put in a nice word for UK.
So my guess is that the only way they could get anything positive about UK -- in a game where UK was going to play IU, and on a weekend where U of L was also trying for the Final 4 -- was to have Joe Hall write it himself. No one else at the C-J was going to.
I love at the end of the video how Ralph Hacker and Cawood Ledford just totally go elbows-up with Bobby Knight. It's the most cutting I remember either of them ever being.
The video of that 1975 is one of the best videos on the Internet.
ReplyDeleteFor me, personally, that's the most important college basketball game ever played, because that's when I became a UK fan for life.

DeleteDuring the era from 1975 to 1984, the C-J's coverage of basketball had the following priorities:
Delete1. Celebrate U of L
2. Celebrate IU
3. Denigrate UK

ReplyDeleteDuring the era from 1975 to 1984, the two people who Cawood plainly disliked were Bobby Knight and Dale Brown.
