In the first game of the KHSAA Boys' State Basketball Tournament, the Lincoln County Patriots defeated the Jeffersontown Chargers 45-41. Next up, the Muhlenberg County Mustangs will play the North Oldham Mustangs.
Lincoln County High School opened in August 1974. According to Wikipedia, it resulted from a merger of the the following schools: Stanford, Crab Orchard, Hustonville, McKinney, and King Mountain.
Lincoln County hasn't reached the State Quarterfinals since 1975. The Patriots have never reached the State Semifinals.
ReplyDeleteYes. WPBX noted this, and I was about to note it, but now I see you noted it.
DeleteThis will be my only day of coverage for the KHSAA Tournament, as I will be traveling for the next three days.
ReplyDeleteWith 1:59 left in the 2d quarter, Muhlenberg leads North Oldham 20-18.
ReplyDeleteMuhlenberg leads 22-20 at the half.
ReplyDeleteIn a very low-scoring game, North Oldham beats Muhlenberg 36-32. North Oldham will meet Lincoln County in the quarter-finals.
ReplyDeleteThere's no truth to the rumors that North Oldham and Muhlenberg will be relocating to the First Region.
DeleteTwitter is reporting that Kenny Payne will be the next coach at U of L. Apparently, if you want to be the head coach at U of L, you should spend time coaching at UK.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Rogers Clark leads Perry Co. Central 35-18 at the half.
ReplyDeleteGRC wins 77-36.
ReplyDeleteWow!
DeleteWith 2:56 left in the second quarter, Pikeville leads North Laurel 23-13. UK signee Reed Sheppard is 1-8 from the field with only 3 points.
ReplyDeleteWith 1:54 left in the second quarter, Pikeville leads 25-18. Sheppard is now 2-9 with 5 points.
ReplyDeleteAt the half, Pikeville -- which has already won the All "A" classic this year -- leads 25-20.
ReplyDeletePikeville:
2-point shooting: 7-13
3-point shooting: 3-11
Free throws: 2-4
N. Laurel:
2-point shooting: 5-14
3-point shooting: 2-8
Free throws: 4-7
On the KHSAA radio broadcast, the Southland Dairy Farmers are urging us to drink chocolate milk as a health drink. I'm up for that.
ReplyDeleteShelby Valley, in 2010, is the only team to win the All A Classic and the Sweet 16 in the same year.
ReplyDeleteNorth Laurel opens with a 3-pointer to make it 25-23, but then Pikeville scores 10 points in a row. North Laurel calls time. Pikeville leads 35-23 with 5:41 left in the third quarter.
ReplyDeleteWith 3:47 left in the 3d quarter, Pikeville leads 38-25. Pikeville has made 3-4 from three-point range in this half. Sheppard has 7 points on 3-13 shooting.
ReplyDeleteWith 2:15 left in the 3d quarter, Pikeville leads 40-27.
ReplyDeleteThis season, North Laurel averaged 79 points per game.
ReplyDeleteNow the KHSAA is running an ad telling you that your son will have better mental health if he plays sports. "I'm glad he's out of the house, he's getting some exercise, and he's off his phone for once."
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Pikeville is cruising. The Panthers lead the Jaguars 44-29 with one quarter to go.
ReplyDeletePikeville is going to win. The Panthers lead 49-36 with 4:41 left.
ReplyDeleteWith 2:51 left, Pikeville leads 49-42. Sheppard has 11 points on 4-16 shooting.
ReplyDeleteI really do like chocolate milk.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, at this point the KHSAA radio stream crashed. So I don't know what happened next. But Pikeville leads 55-47 with 1:12 left.
ReplyDeletePikeville wins 59-51.
ReplyDeletePikeville:
2-point shooting: 16-28
3-point shooting: 7-20
Free throws: 6-11
North Laurel:
2-point shooting: 15-35
3-point shooting: 5-20
Free throws: 6-10
Sheppard went 4-16 from 2-point range, 1-4 from 3-point range, and 3-5 from the line for 14 points.
Today, all four winners at the tournament were wearing the road uniforms.
ReplyDeletePikeville's defense was tremendous. The Panthers are now 31-2, and on Friday they will take on George Rogers Clark, the number 1 team in the Commonwealth.
ReplyDeleteDang about Jtown.
ReplyDeleteAnd safe travels.
Oh, wow! What a day for western Kentucky at the Sweet Sixteen yesterday!
ReplyDeleteFirst Region-champ Murray edged Lexington Henry Clay, 57-53, and Second-champ Lyon County blasted Elizabethtown John Hardin, 82-65. And though Bowling Green is not in western Kentucky, it is home to Western Kentucky University, and Bowling Green Warren Central yesterday slayed Louisville Male, 57-54.
ReplyDeleteToday’s quarterfinals at Rupp Arena in Lexington:
— Lincoln County vs. Goshen North Oldham at 11 a.m. Eastern
— Winchester George Rogers Clark vs. Pikeville at 1:30 p.m.
— Lyon County vs. Covington Catholic at 6
— Murray vs. Warren Central at 8:30
I am rooting for Lincoln, GRC, Lyon and Murray.
Why is it that I find histories of radio stations so particularly interesting?
ReplyDeleteLocal radio came to Lincoln County when WRSL-AM went on the air on November 1, 1961, the station's call letters represented the first initials of each of the four owners: W.G. Morgan, Ray Doss, S.C. Bybee, and Lanier Burchett. In 1962, the license and other assets were transferred to the partners' corporation, Lincoln-Garrard Broadcasting Company, Inc. ...
In August, 2007, Lincoln Garrard Broadcasting Company entered into an Option and Purchase Agreement and Local Marketing Agreement with radio icon Randy Michaels’ RadioActive LLC for WPBK-FM (102.9), Crab Orchard and WKFC-FM (101.9), North Corbin (in a deal brokered by Jay Meyers).
Amid the WPBK preview show, a Republican candidate for local office in Stanford just had a commercial in which he simply read off the names of each of the Lincoln County boys' basketball players. I'm going to go ahead and call that race for whoever that dude was.
ReplyDeleteFrom the other political commercials on the WPBK preview show, it sounds as though the Lincoln Countians shorten their team's Patriots nickname not to "Pats" but to "Pates." I don't believe I've heard anyone else do that, though it makes total sense. I like it, too, because the nickname of my mom's dad was "Pate."
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to forget how quickly a game of high-school basketball goes by. I was amid typing a little comment about how I've never had my name announced over the public-address system at Rupp Arena, how that's what was going on at the moment for the starters in today's game ... then I muted to go look up the name of the P.A. announcer, and, by the time I got back to unmute the WPBK tab, the first period was nearly over. Through Q1 at Rupp:
ReplyDeleteNorth Oldham 12
Lincoln County 11
North Oldham are Mustangs, like seemingly one of every 1.5 high schools in Kentucky.
ReplyDelete5:30 to go in the first half, and the Pates have surged to an 18-12 advantage over the N.O. 'Stangs.
ReplyDeletePates 23 and Nostangs 12 after a bucket by a Lincoln County player whom I'm pretty sure WPBK referred to as "The Bear of King Mountain."
ReplyDeleteA funeral home encourages us to go ahead and consider what sort of funeral and memorials we would want for ourselves, as happy WPBK breaks with the hometown Pates now up on the Nostangs, 27-14.
ReplyDeleteOne of the WPBK commentators is glad to hear his "main man, Tate," is listening, and he wonders whether the man's son, "Tater," is listening, too.
ReplyDeleteHalftime at Rupp in boys' Sweet Sixteen Quarterfinal 1:
ReplyDeleteLincoln County "Pates" Patriots 29
Goshen North Oldham "Nostangs" Mustangs 18
Nostangs, McStangs and Muhlstangs ... yes, I like this plan.
ReplyDeleteHere's a commercial from a candidate for Lincoln County magistrate who coincidentally notes that he was a starting guard on Lincoln County High's 1990 regional-champion basketball team.
ReplyDeleteThe NCAA women's basketball tournament is underway, and I'm listening to the Pates and Nostangs against muted South Florida vs. Miami. It's 11-9, Miami, midway through the first quarter. Having covered several South Florida women's basketball games and one Miami women's basketball game about 30 years ago, I'm surprised the Hurricanes' lead is not already about 60 points.
ReplyDeleteThrough three quarters:
ReplyDeleteLincoln County 44
North Oldham 28
The Pates' lead has dwindled to 10 with 3:23 to go ...
ReplyDeleteNow high-school basketball is going to slow down. North Oldham is starting to foul ...
ReplyDeleteFinal:
ReplyDeletePates 56
Nostangs 46
That's it from Rupp today for WPBK. Now they have the home folk back in Stanford rocking out, Clintons-and-Goresstyle, to Fleetwood Mac's "You Can Go Your Own Way."
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, in the men's NCAA tournament, I had RayRay Harper and Jacksonville State upsetting Bruce Pearl and Auburn, but it's 51-31, Auburn, early in the second half. This is looking bad for my bracket, which also wasn't helped by my national-champion pick's being eliminated last night.
ReplyDeleteSix and a half to go, and Jacksonville State is back within 12 of Auburn ... come on, RayRay!
ReplyDeleteAuburn won.
DeleteOh, my gosh, Lyon County lost to Covington Catholic by two points!
ReplyDeleteHeartbreaking: 59-57.
ReplyDeleteWow. Humdinger.
DeleteIn the second game this afternoon, No. 1 GRC got by Pikeville, 43-38.
ReplyDeleteJason Frakes @kyhighs
ReplyDeleteI know I'm not going to change anybody's mind about the one-class system, but in the past 24 hours:
Pikeville (enrollment: 360) over North Laurel (1,411)
Warren Central (985) over Male (2,026)
Murray (477) over Henry Clay (2,139)
There's always a way.
6:40 PM · Mar 17, 2022
Joshua Moore @JoshMooreHL
And Pikeville and Lyon County nearly eliminated the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state today. STFU about classes.
6:48 PM · Mar 18, 2022
About two minutes to go in the second quarter of the last quarterfinal:
ReplyDeleteMurray 31
Warren Central 24
Warren Central pulls to within 33-30 at the break. Murray has led by as many as 12 in the first half.
ReplyDeleteOK, this is exciting. I still don't know who won ... checking scores now ...
ReplyDeleteWell, dang. Warren Central came back to beat Murray on Friday night, 54-48.
ReplyDeleteSo that set up Saturday semifinals of Lincoln County vs. GRC and CovCath vs. Warren Central. I’m rooting for Lincoln and Central.
OH, MY GOSH! Lincoln took No. 1 to two overtimes! That thing must’ve been lit on WPBK.
ReplyDeleteWinchester George Rogers Clark 54
Lincoln County 51
Oh, my! The Dragons did it!
Warren Central 61
Covington Catholic 58
OK, I’m all in for Central in the championship against Clark County ...
Argh!
ReplyDeleteGeorge Rogers Clark of Winchester 43
ReplyDeleteWarren Central of Morgantown Road 42
What a championship run for the Cardinals of Winchester, which, as previously reported, is where Clint and Ron Howard’s parents were married. GRC came in to the Sweet Sixteen as the state’s top-ranked team and logging totals like 94, 94, 114 and 103 in the last couple of weeks of games. They blasted Perry County Central in the first round, 77-36, but then had to grind and sweat out 43-38, 54-41 (double-overtime) and 43-42 victories over Pikeville, Lincoln County and Warren Central to claim the first-ever George Rogers Clark boys’ basketball state championship. The Cardinals finished 37-1. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteI was going to say that it makes me excited for the girls’ Sweet Sixteen this week, but it turns out that was played two weeks ago! My bad. And congratulations to Louisville Sacred Heart.
