A Celebration of Home, Kentucky, Sports, Music, and Other Passions
I'm planning to work the rest of this week to mostly clips from the 1974 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy Association of America, which got rolling on WDXR Channel 29 in Paducah at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1.
This is the second year that the telethon is originating from Las Vegas. Per super Wikipedia: "In 1973, with 150 Love Network stations in tow, the telethon moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where it originated at the Sahara Hotel. That year, Lewis explained the mission of the MDA with his comment: 'God goofed, and it's up to us to correct His mistakes.'" That sort of notion was at the core of a lot of the criticism of the telethon.
I really like Vikki Carr. Her "With Pen In Hand" just kills me (I FORGIVE YOU, VIKKI CARR!).
Any moment when any part of Michael Jackson is not in the frame or any moment when something obstructs our view of any part of Michael Jackson is a mistake.
Peak Charo.
So excited to discover that Charo performance, by the way. The song she is singing, "Cuanto le Gusta," is one my mother would sing a bit of whenever we would start a trip away from the house: "We're on our way (we're on our way) ..." I never knew where Mom got that, so thank you, Charo, Jerry Lewis, et al. And here's a studio version of Carmen Miranda singing the song with the Andrew Sisters, and I feel certain this is the version that would've caught Mom's fancy.
Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass own "Thus Spoke Zarathustra."
We had at least one Danny Davis album.
I posted that one just for you. But their excellent performance deserved notice, anyway.
I enjoyed the telethon.
