We have finally reached the quarter-finals in the KHSAA football playoffs, which for me is where the playoffs should really begin. To be fair, there were some exciting games over the weekend. McCracken County knocked out Henderson County 17-9. Madisonville beat Hoptown 28-21 in Hoptown. But we've mostly been marking time. So here are your quarter-finalists in all six classes, along with their records. Home teams are listed first. Private schools are in italics. The numbers in parentheses represent each team's ranking by MaxPreps, which ranks every team in the state regardless of class:
Class 6A:
(2) Lou. Male (12-0) v. (7) Lou. St. Xavier (8-4)
(6) N. Hardin (12-0) v. (30) McCracken Co. (9-3)
(3) Lou. Trinity (10-2) v. (46) Oldham Co. (8-4)
(39) Lex. Tates Creek (8-4) v. (35) Simon Kenton (8-4)
Class 5A:
(20) Owensboro (11-1) v. (61) Lou. Fairdale (11-1)
(16) S. Oldham (11-1) v. (15) Bowling Green (8-3)
(1) Cov. Catholic (12-0) v. (54) Madison Southern (7-5)
(8) Lex. Douglass (12-0) v. (45) Southwestern (7-5)
Class 4A:
(36) Madisonville-N. Hopkins (10-2) v. (85) Franklin-Simpson (7-5)
(31) Lou. Central (7-5) v. (88) Lou. Moore (8-4)
(4) Boyle Co. (12-0) v. (79) Cov. Scott (8-4)
(5) Johnson Cent. (12-0) v. (19) Wayne Co. (10-1)
Class 3A:
(37) Paducah Tilghman (9-3) v. (64) Taylor Co. (10-2)
(18) Lou. DeSales (9-3) v. (27) Bardstown (10-2)
(21) Bell Co. (12-0) v. (67) Fleming Co. (10-2)
(22) Belfry (8-3) v. (10) Ashland Blazer (10-2)
Class 2A:
(13) Mayfield (11-1) v. (158) Edmonson Co. (6-6)
(11) Somerset (11-1) v. (125) McLean Co. (8-4)
(48) Breathitt Co. (12-0) v. (127) Walton-Verona (9-4)
(43) Beechwood (7-5) v. (65) W. Carter (9-3)
Class 1A:
(50) Kentucky Country Day (13-0) v. (103) Crittenden Co. (10-2)
(73) Lou. Holy Cross (11-2) v. (58) Newport Cent. Catholic (10-2)
(9) Pikeville (11-0) v. (154) Nicholas Co. (9-4)
(40) Paintsville (9-3) v. (77) Williamsburg (11-2)
MaxPreps predicts the following state champs:
6A: Lou. Male
5A: Cov. Catholic
4A: Boyle Co.
3A: Ashland Blazer
2A: Somerset
1A: Pikeville
If the rankings are accurate, the 1A playoffs should be a walkover for Pikeville. And it will be hard for anyone to stop Cov. Cath. But the other classes promise at least one really good game before we know who the state champions will be.
If we only had three classes (as I would prefer) the matchups could look like this:
ReplyDeleteAAA:
Male v. St. X
N. Hardin v. Bowling Green
Trinity v. Douglass
Cov. Cath. v. Simon Kenton
AA
Madisonville v. Tilghman
DeSales v. Bardstown
Boyle Co. v. Wayne Co.
Johnson Cent. v. Ashland Blazer
A
Mayfield v. KCD
Somerset v. Newport Cent. Catholic
Pikeville v. Breathitt Co.
Paintsville v. Beechwood
I am rooting for McCracken County, Bowling Green, Madisonville-North Hopkins, Paducah Tilghman, McLean County and Crittenden County.
