The folks at the AP got so excited about Lamar Jackson this week that they jumped the Ravens all the way up to number 1 after the 49ers lost (in a classic that went to overtime) to the Seahawks. The Saints plummeted after they were pummeled by the lowly Falcons in New Orleans. The Chiefs got Patrick Mahomes back, but threw away a sure win at Tennessee thanks to one of the worst defenses I've ever seen.
It should be noted that the last four teams to win the NFC are the Panthers, the Falcons, the Eagles, and the Rams. None of those teams is in AP's latest top 10:
1. Baltimore: 7-2
2. New England: 8-1
3. San Francisco: 8-1
4. Seattle: 8-2
5. Green Bay: 8-2
6. New Orleans: 7-2
7. Minnesota: 7-3
8. Houston: 6-3
9. Kansas City: 6-4
10. Dallas: 5-4
The Dolphins won their second game in a row, and moved up to 28. The Redskins are in 31st, one spot above the winless Bengals. (Now you see how good Marvin Lewis really was.) If I were Tua Tagovailoa, I would do whatever could be done to avoid going to Washington or Cincinnati. He might want to talk to John Elway and Eli Manning, two guys who could tell him about the importance of avoiding bad franchises.
The Game of the Week is a noon start on Sunday -- the Ravens are hosting the Texans in a showdown between Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson. That should be fun. It's also the only top-10 match-up of the week.
