Lots of drama yesterday in the regional tournaments. Here's what happened:
1. In Baton Rouge, Rice beat LSU 10-6 to set up a one-game showdown today.
2. In Raleigh, NCSU fought back to take a 5-3 lead over Coastal Carolina into the 9th, at which point the game was suspended by rain. Whoever wins that game will capture the region.
3. In Lubbock, Texas Tech beat Dallas Baptist 5-3 to win that region.
4. In Lafayette, Arizona beat La-Lafayette 3-1. The Wildcats roll through the losers' bracket, and beat the Ragin' Cajuns to win the region.
5. In Nashville, UC Santa Barbara crushed Xavier 14-5 to win that region.
6. In Columbia, the Regional title game between S. Carolina and UNC-Wilmington was postponed due to rain.
So the Super Regionals now look like this (home teams listed first):
1. Florida v. Florida St.
8. LSU or Rice v. NCSU or Coastal Carolina
4. Texas A & M v. Texas Christian
5. Texas Tech v. E. Carolina
3. Miami (Fla.) v. Boston Coll.
6. Mississippi St. v. Arizona
2. Louisville v. UC Santa Barbara
S. Carolina or UNC Wilmington v. Oklahoma St.
The last three regions should be decided today.
So last night, Coastal Carolina trailed 5-3 going into the top of the 9th. With one out and the bases loaded, play was stopped by rain at 12:05 A.M.
ReplyDeleteSo the teams came back today at 2 P.M. Still bases loaded and one out. Still 5-3.
The first batter grounded out to first, scoring a runner. Two outs. 5-4. Runners on second and third.
Coastal Carolina sends up a pinch hitter, who is hit by a pitch. Bases loaded again.
That brought up Seth Lancaster, a sophomore from Hanahan, South Carolina. He ripped a two-run single to put Coastal Carolina in the lead. Billy Cooke, a sophomore from Florida, banged out another single, and the Chanticleers led 7-5.
And that was the final score. The stunned Wolfpack went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th, and Coastal Carolina is going to Super Regionals.
