U.S. Women's Open -- Day Two

Here are the winners (by country) of the women's grand slam events from 2001 to 2010 (only two events have been played this year, for a total of 38):

S. Korea: 9
Sweden: 9 (eight of these were Annika Sorenstam)
United States: 8
Australia: 4 (all from Karrie Webb)
Taiwan: 2 (both from Yani Tseng)
Mexico: 2 (Lorena Ochoa)
Scotland: 1
Norway: 1

Here are the winners (by country) of the men's grand slam events from 2001 to 2010 (only two events have been played this year, for a total of 38):

United States: 23 (9 from Tiger Woods, 4 from Phil Mickelson)
S. Africa: 4
Ireland: 3 (all from Padraig Harrington)
Australia: 2
Argentina: 2 (Angel Cabrera)
N. Ireland: 1
S. Korea: 1
Fiji: 1
Canada: 1

On the whole, I am surprised at how well the American women have done. I would have guessed they were far behind the South Koreans, but it's really quite close. The big gap is not between the U.S. women and the South Korean women, but between the U.S. women and the U.S. men. But that is largely due to the influence of Tiger. If Annika Sorenstam had happened to be an American, the performance of the U.S. women would look quite different.
