XXXIII Olympic Summer Games, Paris 2024 (Wrap)

A lot of this competition is mockery or attacking your opponent--either their character or their moves. But at the end of the day, it's all love.

One of the E! commentators (either B-Boy Kid David or B-Boy Ronnie)

Faster, Higher, Stronger -- Together

  2. When I left the house, Team USA had fallen behind by 10 in the third quarter but then cut France's lead to seven on a three-pointer by Kelsey Plum. Throughout Sunday school, then, I got text updates from friends:

    Tied with 5 to go.

I know I’m biased but I think the officials have decided that France isn’t going home empty handed.

Up 1 with 2 left and shooting 2
    60-57 us

French girl just dribbled it off her own foot.

    Up 1 130 left. They drained a 3

Up 3. They just air balled a 3 under 1

Blocked a 3 then we got fouled. It’s a wrap.

Or it should be. I’m not putting it past these officials to find a 4 point play out of thin air.

We are at the line. Hit both of them

They drained a 3 and fouled us immediately.

France hit a shot at the buzzer it’s a 2 but the officials are looking at it.

    🥇🥇🥇 for real this time

    Phew!

  3. I didn't get too far on going through the countries which at Paris 2024 won their first Olympic medals. In addition to Saint Lucia, those were Botswana in the men's 200 meters and Dominica in women's triple jump in athletics and Guatemala in women's trap shooting.

  4. The only Olympic opening ceremonies I think I remember loving were Beijing 2008 (with the drummers); the only closing, Vancouver 2010 (with the giant hockey players and beavers).

  5. I've loved all of them that I've seen in dribs and drabs, but those are the two I actually remember watching and loving in the moment.

  6. Johnny Weir seems to be really loving these closing ceremonies, and I'm happy for him.

  8. Mike Tirico and Jimmy Fallon are a totally charming pair.

  9. My favorite element thus far of the Paris 2024 closing ceremonies has been the performance of The Phoenix, a French pop band with jangly guitars and heavy synthesizers. I don't remember ever hearing or hearing of them, but they sound great in the Stade de France.

  10. New sports for Los Angeles 2028: flag football, cricket, lacrosse, squash, baseball and softball.

I'm in favor of all of these.

  11. NBC has moved from Paris to a preview of the next Summer Olympics. Venus Williams is hosting the event from the beach. Snoop Dogg, Carl Lewis and Sugar Ray Leonard, have appeared, as have Jagger Eaton, Paris 2024 skateboarding silver medalist in men's street, and Brenda William, a four-time medalist in women's water polo. Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have performed. Williams grew up in Compton; Dogg, in Long Beach; Eilish, in the Highland Park neighborhood; Villa, in Bell Gardens. Anthony Kiedis and Flea met at Fairfax High School in Hollywood. Lewis, of course, won four gold medals at XXIII Olympic Summer Games, Los Angeles 1984.

  12. The plan is to build no new structures for Los Angeles 2028; instead, all of the venues will be repurposed. For example, SoFi Stadium, home of the Rams and Chargers, is going to host the swimming events.

  13. Mike Tirico, a 57-year-old from New York, brings us back to wrap things up from Paris 2024, with a lovely meditation and montage. He tells us NBC employed more than 3,000 people in broadcasting the games. I can believe it. I'm thankful for all of them--and all of the other thousands of athletes, organizers, everyone. The U.S. rower who carried the U.S. flag into the closing ceremonies tonight with Katie Ledecky mentioned getting a haircut from the Olympic Village barber. I'm thankful for that guy, too. What a blast Paris 2024 has been. Thank you for reading.

  14. Great job, Eric! Thank you so much. The Olympics have long been one of the mainstays of the HP, and that's due to you.
