Now that they don't play the PGA Championship in August anymore, there is a hole in the sports calendar between the British Open and the beginning of high school football. But the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship continues to be played in August, and it's going on right now if you are missing August golf on TV. To help you out, here is a list of the golfers who have won the Amateur since the HP began. Golfers who have won a professional major are in bold:

2014: Gunn Yang (KOR)
2015: Bryson DeChambeau
2016: Curtis Luck (AUS)
2017: Doc Redman
2018: Viktor Hovland (NOR)

This year's Amateur is at Hazeltine National Golf Club, near Minneapolis, Minnesota. They are currently playing the Round of 64.
No golfer from Kentucky made the round of 32. In fact, I don't know if anyone from Kentucky even made the round of 64. However, I will be keeping an eye on Jackson Herrington, who just graduated from Dickson County H.S. in Dickson, Tenn., and who will be a freshman at the University of Tennessee this fall. In the round of 32, Jackson will be facing Luis Masaveu, a 21-year-old from Spain.
ReplyDeleteIn the round of 32, Luis Masaveu eliminates Jackson Herrington by a score of 1 up.
ReplyDeleteSo we are down to the round of 16. We still have Christian Brand of Hurricane, W. Va. He is a former golfer for Marshall University. He's up against Jose Luis Ballester of Spain in the round of 16. Ballester, the 2023 European Amateur champion, is a senior at Arizona State.
ReplyDeleteIn the round of 16, Jose Luis Ballester eliminates Christian Brand by a score of 2 and 1. But hey, Lyon County is still the Kentucky High School Basketball Champion.
