Please note that these results include many games that took place before the SEC was formed in 1933. They also do not include many SEC games with teams that are not counted as part of the Classic SEC (such as Georgia Tech and South Carolina). They simply reflect the record of these 10 teams against each other since they all started playing football.
I do think this table helps you see the SEC's secret sauce: the fact that Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, and Auburn are all so close together after over 120 years of football is amazing. Those fan bases always feel like that if they do things right, they could win the national title -- but if they do things wrong, they can be down with the Mississippi schools. That delicate balance is what keeps so many SEC fans on edge.
ReplyDeleteEven Alabama isn't safe. As they learned in the 1980's and 1990's, if they don't have a Hall of Fame Coach, they will pretty soon be down in the mix with the rest of that Top Six. So they are also under a huge amount of pressure.
DeleteAlso, please note that Tennessee has losing records against Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Auburn. But the Vols have run up the score on Kentucky and Vandy, which helps them a lot.
ReplyDeleteThis year, for the first time since 1947, Alabama and Mississippi State are not scheduled to play each other.
ReplyDeleteLSU and Mississippi State are also not scheduled to play each other. That will be the first break in that series since 1943, and the first peacetime break since 1925.
ReplyDeleteBut don't worry, Kentucky fans: UK and Tennessee will meet in Knoxville on November 2.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, Kentucky beat Alabama 6-0 in Lexington on November, 18, 1922. The Cats also beat Alabama 40-34 in Lexington on October 4, 1997.
ReplyDeleteKentucky played Alabama every year from 1922 to 1947, only winning in 1922 (the 1939 game was a tie). Beginning in 1948, Alabama resumed its series with Auburn (they had not met since 1907). Alabama dropped its series with Kentucky, and the two schools did not meet again until 1972.
DeleteIn eight seasons at Kentucky (1946 to 1953), Bear Bryant went 19-16-4 against the other Classic SEC members. The last game he coached at UK was a 27-21 win over Tennessee in Lexington on November 21, 1953.
DeleteI do really wish UK would bring back the "Power K" helmets--at least as much as I wish the Dolphins would go back to their real helmets.
ReplyDeleteYou and me both.
