1973 is many of the same artists as 1972, but we have a few new entries. You forget how back then artists would put out at least one album a year maybe more.
20. La Grange by ZZ Top
I've never been a ZZ Top fan, but this is such an iconic song.
19. These Days by Jackson Browne
I have to admit this song didn't get on my radar until the Glenn Campbell cover with his last album. That cover is fantastic.
18. Who's That Lady by The Isley Brothers
The Isley Brothers are one of those bands that I have learned are hugely influential on modern music. I've been trying to get my daughter to give them more of a listen.
17. Touch Me In the Morning by Diana Ross
I'm obviously a bigger Diana Ross fan than I knew.
16. For the Love of Money by The O'Jays
Such a good band and a great song.
15. Ramblin' Man by The Allman Brothers Band
This will be the end of The Allman Brothers on my lists I have a feeling.
14. Call Me by Al Green
Talk about a run, and no joke he's putting out like 3 albums a year during this time.
13. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John
Another one putting out one to two albums a year during this time and dropping these little gems off and on.
12. Living for the City by Stevie Wonder
Innervisions to me is a top 20 maybe top 10 all time album.
11. New York City Serenade by Bruce Springsteen
I don't listen to much Springsteen these days, but I still love this song.
10. Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder
This live performance is great to watch.
9. Love, Reign O'er Me by The Who
This is another top 20 maybe top 10 album for me, so a good year in that sense.
8. Daniel by Elton John
Turning out the hits.
7. I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song by Jim Croce
He had so many good songs in such a short time.
6. Simple man by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Another band that would go away way to quickly, but this is by far their best song.
5. The Real Me by The Who
Two Who songs in the top 10.
4. If You Want Me to Stay by Sly & The Family Stone
This is another band that had a great run, but this will be the end of their run.
3. Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack
It's a timeless song and she is a very underrated artist.
2. Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight & the Pips
This was a family favorite growing up and I just can't listen to this song without a smile.
1. Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me by Gladys Knight & the Pips
Gladys Knight had an amazing run and I don't understand why she has become such a forgotten artist. These two songs are incredible and I think this is the greatest love song ever recorded. I love the video for this one. The Pips are just the best.
Diana Ross is amazing. She should be even more famous than she is.
ReplyDeleteGladys Knight still has a lot of fans on YouTube. The studio version of "Midnight Train to Georgia" had 38 million views, and the people love her.
ReplyDelete"Superstar, but he didn't get far."
DeleteThe Pips are the best. I have decided that in "Midnight Train to Georgia," the Pips are playing her brothers.
Just over 2,000,000 monthly listeners on Spotify is good. They are right there with Everything But the Girl.
DeleteThe Pips as brothers of Gladys Knight in "Midnight Train to Georgia" is a great theory.
DeleteGood list. In various weeks over the last 20 years, these songs have been among my favorites:

3. Daniel, Elton John
4. Higher Ground, Stevie Wonder
5. The Real Me, The Who
And so these five songs have taken the early lead positions in my favorite songs for the seven days ending Aug. 25.
But, alas, I'm getting back to 1977, and Patti LaBelle's first solo record came out today, Friday, Aug. 19, 1977, and I'm only two songs in. She's clobbering the field ...
Delete1. Funky Music, Patti LaBelle
2. Joy to Have Your Love, Patti LaBelle
