OK, so I cheated just a bit on this one. Most of the classic conferences reflect the world of my childhood and school years. South Carolina left the ACC after the 1970 football season, and was an independent for most of the 1970's and 1980's. But that was an obvious mistake on their part, and I refuse to repeat it. So the Gamecocks are back in my version of the Classic ACC. Here is the Classic ACC as ranked by CBS, with top 20 teams in bold:
14. Clemson
24. N. Carolina St.
44. N. Carolina
46. Maryland
48. Duke
49. S. Carolina
78. Wake Forest
86. Virginia
Clemson opens against Georgia in Atlanta on August 31. They play NCSU at home on September 21, and that game may decide the Classic ACC.
Maryland will be at Virginia on September 14, which will cheer the hearts of local Classic ACC fans.
The last team from the Classic ACC to win the National Championship was Clemson, which won it all in the 2018 season.
