This just isn't Maryland's weekend. The Terps lost, the Ravens lost, the O's lost yesterday, and now the Rangers have put up 5 runs in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead.
That was really painful. Baltimore brought in a relief pitcher after their starter gave up 5 runs in the second. The relief pitcher walked the bases loaded in the top of the 3d, so they brought in another relief pitcher. That relief pitcher gave up a grand slam.
You are Ryan Mountcastle, and you bat second for the Orioles. You come up in the bottom of the 6th with a runner on third. Your team is down 10-5 and you really need to get that man home from third. Down two strikes, do you shorten your stroke to put the ball in play? Of course not. You strike out and then you'll spend the offseason wondering how a team that won 100 games in the regular season went out in the Divisional Series.
Apparently, the Orioles know about something called a five-run homer, because they are swinging for the fences like there's no tomorrow. Just one strikeout and popup after another.
Los Angeles 14 - 23 Philadelphia (Final) (Eagles to go 5-0) Arizona 20 - 34 Cincinnati (Final) (Bengals now 2-3) Broncos 21 - 24 N.Y. Jets (2 minutes left in 4th) Minnesota 20 - 27 Kansas City (2 minutes left in 4th)
In the top of the 9th, Texas gets a leadoff double. The next batter hits a grounder that moves the runner to third. The next batter hits another grounder that brings the runner home. Texas goes up 11-5. Imagine that.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st, Jose Altuve leads off for the Astros. Noticing that the third baseman is playing back, he lays down a perfect bunt and beats it out for a single. After watching the Orioles swing for the fences, it is a joy to watch someone who understands how to play the game.
Once again, former Astro Carlos Correa is up at a key moment, and once again he comes through -- lacing a single to left that scores two runs. The Twins lead 5-0 in the top of the 5th.
The key story of this game is that Pablo Lopez (11-8, 3.66 ERA in the regular season) has completely dominated the Astros. They can do nothing with him, and the Twins still lead 5-0 after six.
So far, this is one of the most boring sets of baseball games I can remember. Day after day, it just seems like one team jumps into the lead and stays there.
Here are the NFL scores from earlier today:
ReplyDeleteBuffalo 20 - 25 Jacksonville (in London, England)
Pittsburgh 17 - 10 Baltimore
New England 0 - 34 New Orleans
Miami 31 - 16 N.Y. Giants
Indianapolis 23 - 16 Tennessee
Detroit 42 - 24 Carolina
Atlanta 21 - 19 Houston
Detroit came through, so I move into Week 6 of the Survivor Pool.

U of L is all the way up to number 14 in the AP poll after its big win over Notre Dame yesterday.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 3d, the Rangers hit a Grand Slam to go up 9-2, and it's going to be a long Sunday in Baltimore.

ReplyDeleteHouston appears to be the only team that knows how to skip the Wild Card Round and be ready to go when the Divisional Series begins.
ReplyDeleteAfter 4, the Rangers lead Baltimore 9-4.

Minnesota 13 - 13 Kansas City (Halftime)
After 4 1/2, the Rangers lead 10-4.
ReplyDeleteGunner Henderson leads off the bottom of the 5th with a home run to make the score 10-5. This is old school American League baseball.

That just leaves Dallas and San Francisco in the Sunday night game.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 9th, Texas gets a leadoff double. The next batter hits a grounder that moves the runner to third. The next batter hits another grounder that brings the runner home. Texas goes up 11-5. Imagine that.
ReplyDeleteWith one out in the bottom of the 9th, the Orioles whack a three-run homer to make the score 11-8. I'm very happy for the folks still at Camden Yards.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the next batter tries to hit another home run and instead flies out to left. O's down to their last out.
ReplyDeleteThe last Oriole batter strikes out -- they never stopped swinging for the fences -- and Texas wins 11-8 to take a 2-0 series lead.
ReplyDeleteFormer Astro Carlos Correa whacks a two-out double to drive in the first run of the game and give Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
ReplyDeleteDown 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st, Jose Altuve leads off for the Astros. Noticing that the third baseman is playing back, he lays down a perfect bunt and beats it out for a single. After watching the Orioles swing for the fences, it is a joy to watch someone who understands how to play the game.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, swinging for the fences can pay off. In the top of the second, Kyle Farmer hammers a two-run homer to put the Twins up 2-0.
ReplyDeleteThe Twins haven't been to the ALCS since 2002. The Rangers haven't been there since 2011. The Astros have been the last six years in a row.
ReplyDeleteMinnesota has the bases loaded with one out in the top of the 5th. The Twins still have a 3-0 lead, and they could blow the game open right here.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, former Astro Carlos Correa is up at a key moment, and once again he comes through -- lacing a single to left that scores two runs. The Twins lead 5-0 in the top of the 5th.
ReplyDeleteIf Minnesota wins this game, the four Wild Card teams will have a record of 5-1 in the Divisional Series after two days.
ReplyDeleteThe key story of this game is that Pablo Lopez (11-8, 3.66 ERA in the regular season) has completely dominated the Astros. They can do nothing with him, and the Twins still lead 5-0 after six.
ReplyDeleteSo far, this is one of the most boring sets of baseball games I can remember. Day after day, it just seems like one team jumps into the lead and stays there.
ReplyDeleteTwins lead 6-0 going into the seventh inning stretch. They've been playing baseball since about 3 PM Central, and there's just been no drama at all.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, the 49ers are beating Dallas 41-10 with 14 minutes left in the game. That may be the most impressive performance by any team all year.
ReplyDeleteTwins win 6-2. So here's where we stand:
ReplyDeleteTexas leads Baltimore 2-0
Houston and Minnesota are tied 1-1
Philadelphia leads Atlanta 1-0
Arizona leads Los Angeles 1-0
I do believe that this baseball season is going to go down as the most invisible for me of all time.
