1991 was another strong year with second albums from Kelly Willis, Lisa Stansfield, and De La Soul. Nirvana exploded on the scene but so did Metallica with mainstream success as well as the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

R.E.M. released "Out of Time" on March 12, 1991, and I spent most of the year listening to that album. My favorite song on "Out of Time" is "Half a World Away," but I really like the whole album.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed few songs the first time I heard them on the radio more than the first time I heard "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" on the radio. I was in Bowling Green in my car, and it just blew me away. I still think it's perfect.
ReplyDeleteLater I learned that Lenny Kravitz is the son of the woman from The Jeffersons, and I was just delighted all over again.
The divorced father of a friend of mine bought the Divinyls CD after hearing "I Touch Myself," and it really, really disturbed her.
ReplyDeleteThat's great. For me it just reminds me of that year. I had a friend who really liked it and so it makes me think of them and hanging out.
DeleteTotally forgot about this Dinosaur Jr. song.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Hot Chili Peppers deliver just a terrific guest spot on The Simpsons.
ReplyDeleteI'm late to everything, and I was late to Nirvana. I had just decided that I really, really liked "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and I had only a couple of weeks before put it on a mix tape when I made the trip over to Wigwam Village in Horse Cave in April 1994. That's where I was when the Kurt Cobain news broke.
ReplyDeleteThere are moments when I just love, love, love that clean sound of early '90s FM-country electric piano that's on Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me." That's another perfect performance for my money.
ReplyDelete"Roller Skating Jam" ... so great
ReplyDeleteIt really is. Love the video too.
