We're off to a slow start with the early games. FOX thought it would be a good idea to have Maryland go to Michigan for their Big Noon game, which I don't understand at all. ABC has Clemson up 7-0 at Wake Forest. Auburn and Missouri are playing to see who is more likely to get a new coach in the near future. And that's about all for now.
This week, Sirius/XM's Seventies on 7 is giving us the Casey Kasem countdown for September 20, 1975, which fits quite well with what Eric has been writing lately. Presumably Eric is listening to this program on WKYX while he drives around Paducah in 1975, running errands before all the stores close at 5 PM.
1975 is, of course, one of the best years in the history of American sports. The 1975 NCAA Basketball Tournament was one of the best ones ever played. The 1975 Masters probably is the best version of that tournament ever played. And wait until you see what happens with the World Series and the NFL season.
"Feelings," by Morris Albert, checks in at number 20 on the Countdown. I don't usually go out of my way to listen to this song, but I enjoy it when it comes on the radio.
Wake Forest still fighting back. Clemson now leads 17-14 with 5:49 left in the first half. And Maryland leads Michigan 13-10 in the second quarter. So maybe I was too cynical.
We go split-screen to Yankee Stadium to see if Aaron Judge will hit his 61st home run. He draws a walk, and we go back to full-screen with Wake/Clemson.
Wake Forest has a collection of receivers who Clemson cannot guard. The Deacons hurl their fifth TD pass of the day, and Wake leads 35-28 with 1:19 left in the third.
From its own 40, Wake has 3d and 17 with 58 seconds left. They pick up 12 yards, and now have a big decision to make. It's 4th and 5 with 49 seconds left. If Wake can complete one more big pass, the Deacons can kick a field goal and win the game. If they get stopped here, Clemson will almost certainly win it in regulation.
That concludes my Clemson viewing until the Playoff. I'm now switching over to Tennessee and Florida. With my subscription to Paramount Plus, I can actually watch this game on KFVS.
Now this is cool: CBS is doing the intro to UT-Florida, and on my radio (I have the TV sound turned down), they are playing "For Those About to Rock," by AC/DC. YEAHH! HOORAY FOR FOOTBALL!!!
That Auburn game had an unbelievable ending. In OT, Auburn kicked a field goal, so Mizzou could win with a TD. The Missouri running back broke free and appeared to be going into the end zone. As he neared the goal line, he reached out the football to break the plane and score the winning touchdown. But HE DROPPED THE BALL, which rolled into the end zone for a touchback. That ended the game and gave the victory to Auburn.
In Knoxville, UT leads Florida 10-7 with 11:59 left in the first half. In Pullman, Washington States leads Oregon 10-3 with 2:46 left in the first quarter. WSU is trying to take the Unofficial College Football Championship (UCFC) from the Ducks.
With 7 seconds left in the first half, and no timeouts left, UT scores to take a 17-14 lead into the half. WSU leads Oregon 10-6 with 6:10 left before halftime.
Back and forth we go. Florida scores to make the score UT 24, UF 21 with 5:55 left in the third. Meanwhile, in Coral Gables, Middle Tennessee is pounding Miami of Florida 31-10 with 8:01 left in the third.
We've reached the point in the proceedings, where the Florida head coach is so angry that he's being physically restrained by his fellow coaches. As someone who has watched many, many games in Knoxville, I know exactly how he feels.
I was in a restaurant in Owensboro, and they had this game playing on a TV behind me, and I was so glad to not be facing in the direction of the screen.
Here's the thing: If you lose your temper in Knoxville, you are almost certainly going to lose. The whole point is to make the folks in Knoxville lose their temper. Rick Pitino lost down there in 1992 and 1993, and then he figured it out. No other UK coach has done so.
That 1953 game was the last game Bryant ever coached at Kentucky. Years later he talked about how he worked himself (and his teams) into a frenzy trying to beat Tennessee. One year he painted all the tackling dummies orange. It didn't work, and he said later that he had painted all the dummied except for one -- obviously referring to himself.
And now Tennessee scores. Vols lead 31-21 with 3:58 left in the 3d. WSU leads Oregon 23-15 with 11:19 left in the 3d. MTSU leads Miami 31-17 with 2:54 left in the third.
Tennessee is rolling now, up 38-17 with 7:55 left in the game. Best performance by the Vols in many years. WSU leads Oregon 27-22 with 14:56 left. MTSU leads Miami 38-24 with 10:19 left.
In Williamsburg, Virginia, Elon storms back from a 28-10 halftime deficit to stun William & Mary 35-31. Elon is a second-half team; they almost caught Vandy a few weeks ago. W & M falls to 3-1 on the year.
Florida scores with 4:49 left to make the score 38-27. The Gators then go for two, and don't make it. I have no idea what the advantage of going for two is supposed to be in that situation.
With 17 seconds left, Florida gets another touchdown to make the score 38-33, and misses another two-point conversion. If the Gators had just kicked two one-point conversions, it would now be 38-35.
WSU has the ball and one more shot to capture the Big Gold Trophy. Trying to move quickly, the Cougars try one of those short passes where the QB flares the ball to a wideout. But an Oregon Duck anticipates the play, picks off the ball and RACES IN FOR A TOUCHDOWN. The Ducks lead 44-34 with 1 minute to go. They have scored 28 points in the fourth quarter, including 21 points in the last 2 1/2 minutes, and they will keep the UCFC.
A &M leads 23-14 after three quarters. Strong performance for them; disappointment for Arkansas so far. Bama leads Vandy 34-3 with 6:55 left in the third.
Honestly, you can't make up how great college football is. This is not a day of high-profile matchups, and yet the games have been spectacular. Now Arkansas has scored to cut A&M's lead to 23-21 with 10 minutes left. The crowd in JerryWorld is going nuts.
Kentucky wins again, picking up a 31-23 victory over Northern Illinois. The Cats move to 4-0, but U of L is now the only non-conference game left -- all the rest are SEC games.
-- Madisonville-North Hopkins football over Calloway County, 67-7 -- WKU over FIU, 73-0 -- UK over Northern Illinois, 31-23 -- Madisonville-North Hopkins Marching Maroons, best 4A band, best overall guard, best overall percussion and grand champions at Daviess County Invitational -- Buffalo 19 at Miami 21
Arkansas has a bad snap that sends them back to the TAMU 25. And then, the Arkansas kicker bangs the field goal attempt off the top of one of the uprights, and the ball bounces back onto the field. The field goal is NO GOOD, and A&M still leads 23-21 with 1:30 left.

ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful thought! Thank you.
DeleteHere were the top 6 in the AP's college football poll as of September 20, 1975:
ReplyDelete1. Oklahoma
2. Michigan
3. Ohio St.
4. So. California
5. Missouri
6. Nebraska
Missouri opened the season by dominating Alabama 20-7 at Legion Field on September 8. One of the biggest surprises of my life.
This game played on the Monday night before the new regular season of NFL Monday Night Football. I was disappointed to not find a clip on YouTube.
DeleteI remember watching it, and it was a blowout.
DeleteClemson leads Wake 14-0 with 5:09 left in the first quarter. I probably won't watch another Clemson game until the Tigers show up in the playoff.
ReplyDeleteOf course, Clemson wasn't in the playoff last year. I didn't miss them at all.
ReplyDelete"Miracles" by Jefferson Starship comes in at number 31 on the Countdown. I have always liked this song.
ReplyDelete1975 is, of course, one of the best years in the history of American sports. The 1975 NCAA Basketball Tournament was one of the best ones ever played. The 1975 Masters probably is the best version of that tournament ever played. And wait until you see what happens with the World Series and the NFL season.
ReplyDeleteClemson leads the all-time series with Wake Forest 69-17-1.
ReplyDeleteThis would have all been better if Wake had played Maryland, and Clemson had played Michigan.
ReplyDeleteOK, that's more like it: Wake Forest scores to pull within 14-7 with 4:13 left in the first.
ReplyDelete"Feelings," by Morris Albert, checks in at number 20 on the Countdown. I don't usually go out of my way to listen to this song, but I enjoy it when it comes on the radio.
ReplyDeleteNumber 19 is "Mr. Jaws," a novelty song by Dickie Goodman. This is about the most 1975 thing ever made.
ReplyDeleteWake Forest still fighting back. Clemson now leads 17-14 with 5:49 left in the first half. And Maryland leads Michigan 13-10 in the second quarter. So maybe I was too cynical.
ReplyDeleteHalftime: Wake Forest 14 - 20 Clemson
ReplyDeleteWake Forest scores its third TD of the game, and the Deacons lead Clemson 21-20 with 12:13 left in the third.
ReplyDeleteNow we're getting somewhere. Wake Forest scores again to lead 28-20 with 7:47 left in the third.
ReplyDeleteNumber one on the Countdown was David Bowie: "Fame." I had no idea that song came out in 1975.
ReplyDeleteHe's on TV a lot in 1975. Here he is doing "Young Americans" as part of a medley with Cher on Cher.
DeleteClemson comes storming back with a TD and 2-point conversion. Wake Forest and Clemson are tied at 28 with 4:29 left in the third.
ReplyDeleteWe go split-screen to Yankee Stadium to see if Aaron Judge will hit his 61st home run. He draws a walk, and we go back to full-screen with Wake/Clemson.
ReplyDeleteWake Forest has a collection of receivers who Clemson cannot guard. The Deacons hurl their fifth TD pass of the day, and Wake leads 35-28 with 1:19 left in the third.
ReplyDeleteDoes Clemson drive the length of the field to tie the score? Of course it does. Clemson and Wake are tied at 35 with 10:40 left.
ReplyDeleteWake kicks a field goal to go up 38-35 with 8:07 left. I don't think that will get it done.
ReplyDeleteMississippi State beats Bowling Green 45-17.
ReplyDeleteWake's defense holds, and Clemson has to settle for a field goal of its own. All tied at 38 with 4:01 left.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia beat Kent State 39-22.
ReplyDeleteFrom its own 40, Wake has 3d and 17 with 58 seconds left. They pick up 12 yards, and now have a big decision to make. It's 4th and 5 with 49 seconds left. If Wake can complete one more big pass, the Deacons can kick a field goal and win the game. If they get stopped here, Clemson will almost certainly win it in regulation.
ReplyDeleteMichigan beats Maryland 34-27.
ReplyDeleteAuburn and Missouri are in overtime, tied at 14. Both coaches may be fired after this game.
ReplyDeleteWake Forest chooses to punt, thereby conceding the game to Clemson. That was a really odd decision.
ReplyDeleteClemson has the ball on its own 14 with 39 seconds left and no timeouts.
ReplyDeleteDabo Sweeney, knowing that he has dodged a huge bullet, runs out the clock and prepares to win in overtime.
ReplyDeleteThat concludes my Clemson viewing until the Playoff. I'm now switching over to Tennessee and Florida. With my subscription to Paramount Plus, I can actually watch this game on KFVS.
ReplyDeleteNow this is cool: CBS is doing the intro to UT-Florida, and on my radio (I have the TV sound turned down), they are playing "For Those About to Rock," by AC/DC. YEAHH! HOORAY FOR FOOTBALL!!!
ReplyDeleteFlorida leads the series with Tennessee, 31-20. The Gators have 16 of the last 17, including the last five in a row.
ReplyDeleteIn overtime, Auburn beats Missouri 17-14.
ReplyDeleteThat Auburn game had an unbelievable ending.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.
DeleteFlorida opens the game by driving down to the UT 21. On fourth and 2, the Gators don't kick the field goal -- instead they go for it, AND GET STOPPED.
ReplyDeleteOf course Clemson beats Wake 51-45 in double overtime. Wake had their chance to win in regulation. They should have taken it.
ReplyDeleteIn Knoxville, UT leads Florida 10-7 with 11:59 left in the first half. In Pullman, Washington States leads Oregon 10-3 with 2:46 left in the first quarter. WSU is trying to take the Unofficial College Football Championship (UCFC) from the Ducks.
ReplyDeleteFlorida drives the length of the field to take a 14-10 lead with 8:28 left in the first half.
ReplyDeleteWashington State hasn't held the UCFC since September 1983, when it lost the title to Michigan.
ReplyDeleteWith 7 seconds left in the first half, and no timeouts left, UT scores to take a 17-14 lead into the half. WSU leads Oregon 10-6 with 6:10 left before halftime.
ReplyDeleteVols score again, and lead 24-14 with 12 minutes left in the third quarter. At the half, WSU leads Oregon 17-9.
ReplyDeleteBack and forth we go. Florida scores to make the score UT 24, UF 21 with 5:55 left in the third. Meanwhile, in Coral Gables, Middle Tennessee is pounding Miami of Florida 31-10 with 8:01 left in the third.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, on KFVS game coverage was preempted for a storm. Fortunately, it's just a severe thunderstorm, and so we're able to go back to the game.
ReplyDeleteWe've reached the point in the proceedings, where the Florida head coach is so angry that he's being physically restrained by his fellow coaches. As someone who has watched many, many games in Knoxville, I know exactly how he feels.
ReplyDeleteI was in a restaurant in Owensboro, and they had this game playing on a TV behind me, and I was so glad to not be facing in the direction of the screen.
DeleteHere's the thing: If you lose your temper in Knoxville, you are almost certainly going to lose. The whole point is to make the folks in Knoxville lose their temper. Rick Pitino lost down there in 1992 and 1993, and then he figured it out. No other UK coach has done so.
DeleteBear Bryant figured it out, but not until he almost left Kentucky. Here's how UK did against UT with Bryant as the coach:
Delete1946: Tennessee 7, Kentucky 0
1947: Tennessee 13, Kentucky 6
1948: Tennessee 0, Kentucky 0
1949: Tennessee 6, Kentucky 0
1950: Tennessee 7, Kentucky 0
1951: Tennessee 28, Kentucky 0
1952: Tennessee 14, Kentucky 14
1953: Kentucky 27, Tennessee 21
That 1953 game was the last game Bryant ever coached at Kentucky. Years later he talked about how he worked himself (and his teams) into a frenzy trying to beat Tennessee. One year he painted all the tackling dummies orange. It didn't work, and he said later that he had painted all the dummied except for one -- obviously referring to himself.
Bear Bryant at Kentucky:
Delete1-5-2 against Tennessee
64-15-3 against everyone else
Mark Stoops at Kentucky:
Delete2-7 against Tennessee
65-46 against everyone else
And now Tennessee scores. Vols lead 31-21 with 3:58 left in the 3d. WSU leads Oregon 23-15 with 11:19 left in the 3d. MTSU leads Miami 31-17 with 2:54 left in the third.
ReplyDeleteTennessee is rolling now, up 38-17 with 7:55 left in the game. Best performance by the Vols in many years. WSU leads Oregon 27-22 with 14:56 left. MTSU leads Miami 38-24 with 10:19 left.
ReplyDeleteIn Williamsburg, Virginia, Elon storms back from a 28-10 halftime deficit to stun William & Mary 35-31. Elon is a second-half team; they almost caught Vandy a few weeks ago. W & M falls to 3-1 on the year.
ReplyDeleteSewanee didn't play today. The Tigers are off to a 2-1 start with a win over St. Scholastica, a loss to Washington & Lee, and a win over Westminster.
DeleteWKU beat Florida International by 73-zip!
DeleteFlorida scores with 4:49 left to make the score 38-27. The Gators then go for two, and don't make it. I have no idea what the advantage of going for two is supposed to be in that situation.
ReplyDeleteWSU leads Oregon 27-22 with 12:14 left. MTSU leads Miami 45-24 with 6:25 left.
ReplyDeleteIn Lubbock, Texas Tech beats Texas 37-34 in overtime.
ReplyDeleteMTSU still leads Miami 45-31 with 3:38 left.
ReplyDeleteWith 17 seconds left, Florida gets another touchdown to make the score 38-33, and misses another two-point conversion. If the Gators had just kicked two one-point conversions, it would now be 38-35.
ReplyDeleteFlorida recovers the onside kick with 17 seconds left. They could really use those two conversions right now.
ReplyDeleteFlorida has the ball, down 38-33, six seconds left, on the UT 39. Here we go!
ReplyDeleteDeath.
DeleteTennessee gets a good rush, the pass is weak -- and the ball is intercepted! The game is over! Tennessee wins!
ReplyDeleteFinal score: Tennessee 38 - 33 Florida
ReplyDeleteOnly UT's second win against UF since 2004. I'm not sure UF has ever been swept by UT and UK before, but it has happened this year.
ReplyDeleteIn the battle for the UCFC, WSU leads Oregon 34-29 with 3:48 left.
ReplyDeleteMTSU beat Miami 45-31.
ReplyDeleteI saw people making a big deal of the MTSU/Tennessee-over-Miami/Florida combo. Oh, but if all four of those teams could've lost.
DeleteOle Miss hangs on to beat Tulsa, 35-27.
ReplyDeleteI was with my brother-in-law at the restaurant in Owensboro, and he had this game on his phone throughout the meal.
DeleteHeartbreak in Pullman. With 1:21 left, Oregon takes a 37-34 lead in the battle for the UCFC.
ReplyDeleteWSU has the ball and one more shot to capture the Big Gold Trophy.
ReplyDeleteOregon's next title defense will be at home, next Saturday, against the Stanford Cardinal.
ReplyDeleteWestern Kentucky beat Florida International by the remarkable score of 73-0.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for 80.
DeleteOregon beats Washington State 44-41 to hold the UCFC.
ReplyDeleteAt the half, Arkansas leads Texas A & M 14-13. With 10:47 left in the first half, Alabama leads Vandy 21-3.
ReplyDeleteAaron Judge did not hit a home run today. He remains at 60.
ReplyDeleteSEC Shorts has a nice Aaron Judge reference today
DeleteA & M leads Arkansas 20-14 with 11:41 left in the third. Aggies have scored 20 points in a row. Bama leads Vandy 31-3 at the half.
ReplyDeleteTexas Christian beats Southern Methodist 42-34.
ReplyDeleteLarry Vaught just tweeted that UK and Ole Miss are each 15-3 in their last 18 games.
ReplyDeleteA &M leads 23-14 after three quarters. Strong performance for them; disappointment for Arkansas so far. Bama leads Vandy 34-3 with 6:55 left in the third.
ReplyDeleteBama leads the all-time series with Vandy 59-19-4. They played each other every year from 1960 to 2002, and Vandy won twice.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, you can't make up how great college football is. This is not a day of high-profile matchups, and yet the games have been spectacular. Now Arkansas has scored to cut A&M's lead to 23-21 with 10 minutes left. The crowd in JerryWorld is going nuts.
ReplyDeleteKentucky wins again, picking up a 31-23 victory over Northern Illinois. The Cats move to 4-0, but U of L is now the only non-conference game left -- all the rest are SEC games.
ReplyDeleteMy rooting weekend:
Delete-- Madisonville-North Hopkins football over Calloway County, 67-7
-- WKU over FIU, 73-0
-- UK over Northern Illinois, 31-23
-- Madisonville-North Hopkins Marching Maroons, best 4A band, best overall guard, best overall percussion and grand champions at Daviess County Invitational
-- Buffalo 19 at Miami 21
Quite a weekend.
A&M still leads 23-21 with 3:30 left, but Arkansas is in the Red Zone. Whoever loses this one is going to hurt.
ReplyDeleteArkansas has a bad snap that sends them back to the TAMU 25. And then, the Arkansas kicker bangs the field goal attempt off the top of one of the uprights, and the ball bounces back onto the field. The field goal is NO GOOD, and A&M still leads 23-21 with 1:30 left.
ReplyDeleteThat's all for me for tonight.
ReplyDeleteWonderful report--thank you.
