Lyon County High School last went to the Boys' State Basketball Tournament in 1951.
ReplyDelete1951 was also the last time a team from Clark County won the Boys' State Tournament. The old Clark County High beat Cuba in the Finals. In 1963, Clark County was consolidated with Winchester High to form George Rogers Clark High School.
ReplyDeleteLyon County is at Madisonville tonight. According to Twitter, the Lyons haven't beaten Madisonville since 1998. After one quarter, Lyon County leads 15-14.
ReplyDeleteAfter three quarters, Lyon County leads Madisonville 51-50. Meanwhile, Bowling Green beat Warren Central 49-42.
ReplyDeleteLyons were up 36-27 at the half, but the Maroons had a good third quarter.
DeleteI'm looking at a picture of Madisonville's gym, and they have an "M" in the center circle that is pointed toward one of the goals, instead of being pointed toward one of the sidelines. The only other gym I've ever seen with a sideways letter like this was the old Cole Field House back in the 1970's, and that was also an "M." That sideways "M" always seemed really odd to me, and I'd love to know why Madisonville has gone with a similar look.
ReplyDeleteIt's a really nice gym. They have up pictures of various teams of note from throughout the school history--for example, the girls' golf teams that won the Kentucky state championships in 1990 and '91. My wife, who was at North at that time, is sure to never let those teams be forgotten whenever she's around conversations about great athletes and teams in Maroons history (which is pretty often, actually).
DeleteIf you can find out why they have a sideways "M," I would really appreciate it.
DeleteLyon County has pulled off the big win at Madisonville! Lyon County beats Madisonville 71-66. Amazing stuff.
ReplyDeleteSo the editor of the Messenger is writing the game stories for the Maroons--I guess they haven't been able to find or quit hiring sports writers. Anyway, he is writing the stories in an A-B-C way: The teams arrived at this gym with these records; here's what happened in the first quarter; here's what happened in the second ... and so on.
ReplyDeleteI was initially put off by this because I was taught very early on--probably by Mrs. Jones--to not do that. Instead, you get the final score in the first few paragraphs because that is the news and you are delivering news and other people will take care of tale-telling if that is to be done, etc.
ReplyDeleteBut I've come to enjoy the editor's sports stories. I had a pretty bad feeling from the first paragraph that Lyon County was going to win this game, but I still wasn't certain until the jump, and the drama actually did keep me reading. The editor wrote that the lead went back and forth 11 times in the fourth quarter. North got it back down to one possession with 10 seconds to go, but then the Lyon kid they fouled made his free throws.
