So far, they have played 18 innings of this World Series in Atlanta, and the Astros have only scored two runs. That's not going to get it done. Atlanta followed up its 2-0 win on Friday with a 3-2 win last night. After all these years, the Braves have suddenly won a whole string of close games in these playoffs, and they can wrap up the whole thing tonight.
7:08 P.M. Central: Houston at Atlanta (FOX) (Atlanta leads 3-1)
In the bottom of the 1st in Game Five, Adam Duvall hits a grand slam to left, putting the Braves up 4-0.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 2d, Alex Bregman breaks out of a dreadful slump to double in a run and make the score 4-1. Astros have runners on 2d and 3d with their 8 and 9 spots coming up.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Nats stop a runner at third with only one out, that runner is almost always stranded. But the Astros are a great club, and their number-8 hitter -- Martin Maldanado -- lofts a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 4-2.
ReplyDeleteHouston's pitcher strikes out to end the inning, but Houston gets two huge runs. Atlanta 4, Houston 2 after 1 1/2. There's already been more drama in this game than in most of the series up to this point.
ReplyDeleteIn the bottom of the 2d, Carlos Correa makes a spectacular play behind second base to rob Dansby Swanson of a leadoff single. Correa races to his left, scoops up the ball, spins, and delivers a strike to first. What a play!
ReplyDeleteThe Braves started this game with another "opener" -- Tucker Davidson, who only through 20 innings in the regular season. Davidson gave up two runs through the first two innings. In the top of the 3d, Davidson had a long battle against Altuve, and eventually got him to ground to short. But an error by Dansby Swanson put Altuve on first, and Davidson then walked Brantley to put men on first and second. So that's all for him. Now the Braves are going with Jesse Chavez, who went 3-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 30 appearances.
ReplyDeleteObviously, Davidson only "threw" 20 innings.
DeleteCorrea works a full count and then laces a double to center. Altuve scores. Brantley stops at third. Still no one out. Atlanta 4, Houston 3.
ReplyDeleteNow Chavez gets Yordan Alvarez on a short fly to left. One out. Still men on second and third.
ReplyDeleteYuli Gurriel grounds out to short, Brantley scores, and the game is tied at 4.
ReplyDeleteBregman flies out to end the inning, but the Astros have come back to tie the game at 4 after 2 1/2 innings.
ReplyDelete"Freddie Freeman" is the perfect name for a baseball hero.
