College World Series Update

Here's what has happened so far in Omaha (seedings in parentheses):

Saturday, June 19:
N. Carolina St. 10, (9) Stanford 4
(4) Vanderbilt 7, (5) Arizona 6 (12 innings)

Sunday, June 20:
Virginia 6, (3) Tennessee 0
(7) Mississippi St. 2, (2) Texas 1

Monday, June 21:
(9) Stanford 14, Arizona 5 (Arizona eliminated)
N. Carolina St. 1, (4) Vanderbilt 0

Tuesday, June 22:
(2) Texas 8, (3) Tennessee 4 (Tennessee eliminated)
(7) Mississippi St. 6, Virginia 5
MSU was down 4-0 going into the 8th inning, and was being no-hit to boot.  The Bulldogs scored 6 runs in the top of the 8th and won the game.

Wednesday, June 23:
(4) Vanderbilt 6, (9) Stanford 5 (Stanford eliminated)
Vanderbilt fell behind 4-2, and still trailed 5-4 with two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the 9th.  They then got a walk, a single, another single (to tie the game), and a wild pitch to win it.

Thursday, June 24:
(2) Texas 6, Virginia 2 (Virginia eliminated)

So Vandy should be playing NCSU right now, but something has gone wrong due to COVID, and the game is delayed.

  1. The NCAA now says that the game will begin at 2:07 PM Central Time.

  2. NCSU reports that "several players" from its team have been put into COVID protocol and will not be available for today's game.

  3. In one of the longest 3-1 games you will ever see, Vandy took three hours and 40 minutes to beat a depleted NCSU team, thanks in large part to six innings of brilliant pitching from ace Kumar Rocker. The Commodores and the Wolfpack will meet again tomorrow in a winner-take-all showdown to decide who gets to play in the final.

  4. Next up, Texas will play Mississippi State.

  5. Well, I was wrong. Due to a very odd collection of circumstances, we will have two SEC teams in the final.
