Right now, LSU leads Tennessee 2-1 in Knoxville in the top of the 6th.
Meanwhile, in the Semi-State baseball games over at Western Kentucky University, Lyon County beat Owensboro Catholic 4-3 in 8 innings to advance to the State Quarterfinals in Lexington.
ReplyDeleteIn the nightcap at Western, McCracken County trails Bowling Green 3-0 after two innings.
ReplyDeleteMcCracken County was 32-5 and number 4 in the state. Bowling Green was 34-5 and number 5 in the state. Under these circumstances, it is unfortunate that the Mustangs had to play this game in Bowling Green. The Purples lead 4-0 in the top of the 5th.
ReplyDeleteCollege baseball has definitely become a huge deal in the SEC. Mississippi State had over 14,000 people at their game today, and the games in Nashville and Knoxville have been packed with rabid fans.
ReplyDeleteIn the bottom of the 6th, Tennessee scores on a walk, a double, and a fielder's choice. The Vols and Tigers are tied at two, and Tennessee has runners on the corners with only one out.
ReplyDeleteTexas should roll through their games with South Florida without too much trouble. The Longhorns lead 2-0 in the bottom of the 2d of Game One.
ReplyDeleteTennessee draws a walk and the bases are loaded. The boisterous crowd in Lindsay Nelson Stadium gets even louder.
ReplyDeleteTennessee hits a slow dribbler to second. LSU gets the second out, but UT takes a 3-2 lead.
ReplyDeleteTennessee gets a huge two-out single, and the Vols lead 4-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Louisville didn't make the Tournament this year, but Tennessee is playing their game.
ReplyDeleteIf you see the joy and fervor surrounding this game, you wouldn't believe that MLB is changing the rules to give its fans less baseball.
ReplyDeleteFor example, consider what fans of the Washington Nationals are going through. Today, for the first Saturday since 2019, the Nats are able to host a full house of fans. Their opponents are the San Francisco Giants, one of the best teams in the league. And they are playing a double-header. Should be a great day to see two games, right? Wrong. First, you can't buy one ticket for both games -- the first game started at 2, and the second at 7. Second, each game was scheduled for only seven innings. Third, when the second game ended in a 0-0 tie after seven, MLB imposed their stupid ghost-runner rule to break up the pitchers' duel.
ReplyDeleteEverything that MLB does is based on the assumption that most people don't want to watch baseball games. Everything the SEC does assumes that fans are excited to see good baseball. So SEC baseball is flourishing, while MLB is struggling.
ReplyDeleteTennessee is finally out, but the Vols lead 4-2 going into the 7th.
ReplyDeleteTennessee mows down LSU 1-2-3 in the 7th, and Vol Nation is rocking in Knoxville.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 8th, LSU has a runner on first and one out. With two strikes on the batter, the runner tries to steal second. The batter strikes out. The runner should have been safe, but he does that thing where you slide over the bag, and he's tagged out. Double play. Vols still lead 4-2.
ReplyDeleteMcCracken County hits a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 4-2. AND MCCRACKEN COUNTY SCORES THREE RUNS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 7TH TO BEAT BOWLING GREEN 5 TO 4! THE MUSTANGS ADVANCE TO THE QUARTER-FINALS IN LEXINGTON!
ReplyDeleteDown through the years, teams in the First and Second Regions have done very poorly against teams from Owensboro and Bowling Green. But today McCracken County and Lyon County went to Western Kentucky University and swept Bowling Green and Owensboro Catholic in thrilling fashion, winning both games by one run. Amazing stuff!
ReplyDeleteThe State Quarter-Finals will begin at Legends Field in Lexington on June 16. Here are the matchups:
ReplyDeleteThursday, June 16:
Collins v. McCracken Co.
Danville v. Lex. Lafayette
Friday, June 17:
Lyon Co. v. Whitley Co.
Hazard v. Lou. Trinity
LSU had the tying runs on 2d and 3d with two out, but UT gets a huge strikeout to end the game. The Vols win 4-2, and they are one victory from Omaha. They're singing "Rocky Top" in Knoxville, and who can blame them.
ReplyDeleteSo I tune in to WPSD's local news to see the highlights. The lead story is that the weather in the Channel 6 Region is terrible, with highs in the 90's and lots of thunderstorms.
ReplyDeleteIn the bottom of the 2d, Ole Miss leads Arizona 3-0.
ReplyDeleteThey're doing a model airplane show in Paducah! I love model airplanes.
ReplyDeleteStill in the bottom of the 2d, Ole Miss now leads 7-0. Looks like that series is headed for a winner-take-all game tomorrow.
ReplyDelete82 degrees in Paducah right now. High of 91 tomorrow. High of 86 on Tuesday, and then Wednesday is described as "Very Nice!" with a high of 85.
ReplyDeleteNow they're asking people to donate fans as part of the "Beat the Heat" program.
ReplyDeleteHere are the highlights for McCracken County. The Mustangs had tied the game at 4, and with two outs they hit a fly to right. It should have ended the inning, but the BGHS right fielder overran the ball. It dropped, and MCHS won the game.
ReplyDeleteLyon County blew a 3-0 lead, and went to extra innings tied at 3, but the Lions say that they are mentally tough, and they prevailed 4-3 in extras.
ReplyDeleteGo, Teams in the Channel 6 Region!
ReplyDeleteSouth Florida scores three runs in the top of the 9th, and the Bulls are tied with Texas 3-3. The Longhorns will have a chance to win it in the bottom of the 9th.
ReplyDeleteSure enough, with two out in the bottom of the 9th a Texas runner reaches on an error. The next batter whacks a double, Texas wins 4 to 3.
