It was so nice to have this back, and the weather in Georgia was glorious. Here are the top ten after the first day:
1. J. Rose (ENG): -7 (65)
T2. B. Harman: -3 (69)
T2. H. Matsuyama (JPN): -3 (69)
T4. W. Zalatoris: -2 (70)
T4. W. Simpson: -2 (70)
T4. C. Bezuidenhout (RSA): -2 (70)
T4. P. Reed: -2 (70)
T8. S. Kim (KOR): -1 (71)
T8. J. Kokrak: -1 (71)
T8. S. Lowry (IRL): -1 (71)
T8. T. Hatton (ENG): -1 (71)
T8. J. Spieth: -1 (71)
A few big names and a lot of unknowns on that list. Today should give us more information on two big questions. First, is Justin Rose going to run away (a la Ray Floyd in 1976), or will he come back to the pack? The basketball tournaments didn't have very many competitive games, so I've gotten accustomed to blowouts, but we'll see what happens. Second, there are a lot of huge names just outside the top 10, including Jon Rahm (even), Justin Thomas (+1), Collin Morikawa (+1), Bubba Watson (+2), and Dustin Johnson (+2). Some of those folks will probably go low today and move into contention. Should be another day of high drama in Augusta.
Justin Rose shoots a three-over par 39 on the front. He is now 4 under par, and he leads the Masters by only one shot.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Spieth is one-under through four holes. That makes him two under for the tournament, and means that he trails the leader by only two shots.
ReplyDeleteThree-way tie for the lead:
ReplyDelete1. B. Wiesberger (AUT): -4 (34 holes)
1. M. Leishman (AUS): -4 (31)
1. J. Rose (ENG): -4 (28)
I honestly don't remember ever hearing of Bernd Wiesberger, and I know I've never heard of Will Zalatoris, who one of golfers now tied with fellow Texan Spieth at 2-under.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of Wiesberger but not Zalatoris.
DeleteBrian Harman birdies the second hole, and moves into a four-way tie for the lead.
ReplyDeleteBrian Harman bogeys the third hole, and falls out of a tie for the lead.
ReplyDeleteSpieth still at 2-under for the tournament through seven holes, still two shots off the lead.
ReplyDeleteBernd Wiesberger shoots a 31 on the front nine, and a 35 on the back, and that gives him a 6-under par 66 for the day, and a 4-under par 140 for two days. He is the clubhouse leader. Leishman is 4-under through 14 holes, and Rose is 4-under through 12 holes. After bogeying 4, 6, and 7, Rose has made five pars in a row.
ReplyDeleteMarc Leishman birdies the 15th hole to move to 5-under par. He is all alone in first place at the Masters.
ReplyDeleteRose birdies the 13th hole, and ties Leishman at 5 under. Tony Finau birdies 8, 9, and 10, and he is now 4 under. Spieth shoots a 1-under 35 on the front nine, and he's 2 under for the tournament.
ReplyDeleteRose birdies the 14th hole, and is all alone in the lead at 6-under par. He still has the relatively easy 15th hole coming up.
ReplyDelete1. J. Rose (ENG): -6 (32 holes)
ReplyDelete2. M. Leishman (AUS): -5 (34)
T3. B. Wiesberger (AUT): -4 (36)
T3. T. Finau: -4 (28)
Cameron Smith birdies the 12th and eagles the 13th. He's now 5-under par. Justin Thomas was even par heading to the 8th. He birdies the 8th, the 11th, the 12th, and the 13th to move to 4-under. Finau and Spieth are both at 3-under through 13.
ReplyDeleteRose birdies the 16th and is back to even par for the day, 7-under for the tournament.
ReplyDelete1. J. Rose (ENG): -7 (35 holes)
ReplyDeleteT2. M. Leishman (AUS): -5 (36)
T2. C. Smith (AUS): -5 (31)
Rose has a long birdie putt on 18. He lines it up, gives it a roll, and it just slides past on the low side of the cup. He taps in for an even par 72 -- 39 on the front and 33 on the back. He's at 7-under par for the tournament, and will probably be the leader at the midway point.
ReplyDeleteSmith bogeys the 14th hole, and falls back to 4-under par, in a 6-way tie for third behind clubhouse leaders Rose (7-under) and Leishman (5-under).
ReplyDeleteFinau and Thomas birdie the 15th hole, and both move to 5-under.
ReplyDelete1. J. Rose (ENG): -7 (36 holes)
ReplyDeleteT2. M. Leishman (AUS): -5 (36)
T2. T. Finau: -5 (33)
T2. J. Thomas: -5 (33)
Smith goes into the water on 15, takes a double bogey, and falls back to 2-under.
ReplyDeleteSpieth birdies the 15th, and moves to 4-under par.
ReplyDeleteBryson DeChambeau shoots a 67, and is 1-under par for the tournament.
ReplyDeleteSpieth rolls in a long birdie putt on the 17th hole, and he is now 5-under par.
ReplyDeleteI've been noticing that they have all these odd angles of Augusta National that I haven't seen before -- they're too high for a regular camera, but too low for a blimp. I just realized that they must be using drones.
ReplyDeleteKoepka and his pink hat are on their way to miss the cut. He's five-over par with nine holes left.
ReplyDeleteFinau three-putts the last hole and falls back to 4-under. Thomas also three-putts -- his second putt was a terrible miss from about two feet -- and also falls back to 4-under par.
ReplyDelete1. J. Rose (ENG): -7 (36 holes)
ReplyDeleteT2. M. Leishman (AUS): -5 (36)
T2. J. Spieth: -5 (35)
S.W. Kim birdies the 13th, and he moves to 5-under par.
ReplyDeleteSpieth pars the 18th, and finishes with a 68 that leaves him at 5-under par.
ReplyDeleteMcIlroy is 6-over with 10 holes left, and he will probably also be going home for the weekend.
ReplyDeleteKim bogeys the 14th, and falls back to 4-under.
ReplyDeleteZalatoris shoots a 31 on the back nine, with birdies on 11, 12, 16, 17, and 18. He moves to 6-under par for the tournament. Harman shoots his second consecutive 69, and he is also 6-under par.
