OK this will sound oversimplified and unfair to Brandi Carlile, but if I were to tell you that she represents the perfect NPR singer-songwriter of 2018 wouldn't you understand what I meant? At least living here in 2018? If you read this in 10 years then just listen to the album and you'll know what the perfect NPR singer-songwriter of 2018 sounds like. This is not meant by the way to be a knock on Brandi Carlile, just how I think of this album.
Carlile has a big voice, reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt and knows how to use it. This album consists of big songs that perfectly highlight her voice. To me the album feels a bit overproduced at times. I prefer the moments that are quieter and more stripped down like the song "The Mother."
Like so many albums this one struggles from not having that one really great song. Following the Rhapsody rating method I give the album 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
I think the NPR point is square on.
