So the state title games are this week, and here's what has happened with the KHSAA football playoffs so far. As you'll see, it's not a banner year for western Kentucky:
In Class 6A, McCracken County was crushed 34-10 at home by Pleasure Ridge Park in the very first round to end the Mustangs' season. Trinity beat Ballard 63-20 in one quarter-final, St. X beat Male 31-21 in another, and then Trinity beat St. X 24-14 in the semis. Trinity will meet Lexington Lafayette in the final. Lafayette beat Simon Kenton 63-41 in one quarterfinal, Scott County beat Ryle 42-40(!) in the other, and then Lafayette beat Scott County 48-47 (!!!) in the semis to set up a meeting with Trinity.
In Class 5A, Bowling Green beat Marshall County (43-14), Christian County (44-29), Owensboro (50-21), and Fern Creek (34-7) to reach the finals. The Purples will meet Pulaski County, which beat South Oldham 62-55 (!!) in the other semi-final.
In Class 4A, Hoptown went out 28-24 to South Warren in the second round. Franklin-Simpson beat Hopkins Co. Central (61-6), Allen County-Scottsville (40-0), South Warren (33-16), and John Hardin (27-7) to reach the finals. The Wildcats will play Johnson Central, which has won its four playoff games by a combined score of 211-15.
In Class 3A, E-Town beat Fort Campbell (49-0), Tilghman (47-13), and Caldwell Co. (35-10) to reach the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Lou. Central 21 to 14. The Yellow Jackets will play Belfry in the final for the fourth time in the last six years.
In Class 2A, Mayfield reached the semi-finals before losing to Christian Academy-Louisville by 48-24. This will be the first season since 2011 that Mayfield hasn't won a state title, and the first season since 2008 that Mayfield hasn't played for the state title. Christian Academy-Louisville will play Danville for the state championship.
In Class 1A, Russellville reached the semi-finals, where Beechwood crushed them 35-0. Beechwood will play Hazard for the state championship.
