Sometimes Bob Griese of Evansville's Rex Mundi High looks like the league's new Bart Starr, and sometimes he looks like the league's old Bart Starr--the one before Vince Lombardi got to Green Bay. I hope Shula can eventually turn Griese into a more consistent performer.
Colts 39 at Jets 32 ... Namath had some pretty throws, but he also had two interceptions returned for touchdowns ... Baltimore joins Miami at 4-1 and the AFC East lead, and New York slips to 1-4.
The Oilers picked up Charley Johnson from the Cardinals this offseason to be their new quarterback, but he's injured in this game--and it looked like a long-term thing.
Cooper Rollow, sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, reported Oc.t 11, 1970, that "a special post office box has been established for those who would like to send Starr a salute. All letters will be presented to 'Mr. Quarterback' of halftime (of the Packers' game in this episode of This Week in Pro Football). The address is 'Bart Starr Day, Box 1970, Green Bay Wisconsin 54305."
It'd be great if that P.O. box remains active.
Cooper Rollow also reported, "in Pittsburgh, they are referring to Quarterback Terry Bradshaw as 'a Christian Bobby Layne.'"
Great picture of the scoreboard at Kezar Stadium.
ReplyDeleteI thought of you when I screen grabbed it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks to me like the designer of the TWIPF set expected the Chiefs and Redskins to play in Super Bowl V.
ReplyDeleteIt's great having Don Shula in Miami.

ReplyDeleteDennis Shaw looks great in Buffalo, and Wayne Patrick is one of my favorite types of football players to watch.
ReplyDeleteThat Paul Warfield pickup was big for the Dolphins, too.
ReplyDeleteOK, good ... Miami 33 at Buffalo 14 ... the Dolphins go to 4-1; the Bills, 1-4. Whatever happened to O.J. Simpson?
ReplyDeleteAnd what has happened to Joe Namath?

ReplyDeleteOld Eagle defensive back Tom Brookshire disputes the old AFL's claim to bump-and-run advent.
ReplyDeleteTerry Bradshaw, the overall No. 1 choice this past draft, throws his first NFL touchdown pass.

ReplyDeleteSteelers 7 at Oilers 3 ... Pittsburgh and Houston are now both 2-3.
ReplyDeleteWell, the Joe Kapp pickup hasn't yet turned around everything in Boston yet ... Giants 16 at Patriots 0 ... New York is 2-3, and Boston is 1-4.
ReplyDeleteI always love being introduced to football players I've never heard of, and I had never heard of Denver running back Fran Lynch!
ReplyDelete(Rest in peace, Fran Lynch.)
