The big story of Day One was, of course, the fact that defending champion Jordan Spieth shot a six-under par 66 to take a two-shot lead on the field. If Spieth keeps putting like he did yesterday, it's hard to see how anyone can beat him. On the other hand, it won't be easy to keep putting like he did yesterday.
The rest of the Americans are doing about as well as they usually do:
1. J. Spieth: -6 (66)
T2. D. Lee (NZL): -4 (68)
T2. S. Lowry (IRL): -4 (68)
T4. P. Casey (ENG): -3 (69)
T4. S. Garcia (ESP): -3 (69)
T4. S. Kjeldsen (DEN): -3 (69)
T4. I. Poulter (ENG): -3 (69)
T4. J. Rose (ENG): -3 (69)
T9. B. Horschel: -2 (70)
T9. R. McIlroy (NIR): -2 (70)
T9. S. Piercy: -2 (70)
T9. D. Willett (ENG): -2 (70)
The big surprise of the day was the struggles of Adam Scott (76) and Jason Day (72), who have both been lights-out most of the year.
After 5 holes today, Davis Love III is 2-under for the day and 3-under for the tournament.
ReplyDeleteBubba Watson, who is 7 over par with 8 holes left in his round, is going to miss the cut.
ReplyDeleteDL3 is even par for the tournament through 12.
Leaderboard:
ReplyDelete1. J. Speith: -5 (28 holes)
2. R. McIlroy (NIR): -3 (35)
T3. D. Lee (NZL): -2 (36)
T3. S. Piercy: -2 (36)
T3. P. Casey (ENG): -2 (28)
At one point this afternoon, Spieth was 8-under and cruising with a five-shot lead. But he double-bogeyed the fifth, and a bogey on 10 has dropped him back to 5-under.

B. Watson: 6 over (36)
E. Els (RSA): 9 over (36)
R. Fowler: 10 over (28)
By the way, it is extremely windy in Augusta, which explains the high scores.
ReplyDeleteMcIlroy's drive on 18 got him into all sorts of trouble, but he saves par to finish with a 71 that leaves him at 3 under par. The way things are going, that will be a very good score by the end of the day.
ReplyDeleteBryson DeChambeau, an amateur from SMU, is playing spectacular golf -- he's 4-under for the round and the tournament with three holes left in this round.
ReplyDeleteLeaderboard:
ReplyDelete1. J. Spieth: -6 (33)
2. Mr. B. DeChambeau (am): -4 (33)
3. R. McIlroy (NIR): -3 (36)
T4. D. Lee (NZL): -2 (36)
T4. S. Piercy: -2 (36)
T4. H. Matsuyama (JPN): -2 (32)
Spieth and Mr. DeChambeau both bogey the 16th hole -- which has been extremely difficult the last two days -- and fall back to 5-under and 3-under respectively.
ReplyDeleteWell, well, well ... the leaderboard going into the weekend looks exciting!
