Next up, Arkansas will play Miami in an elimination game, while Virginia will take on Florida.
In the first elimination game of the tournament, Miami leads Arkansas 2-1 after six innings.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 7th, Arkansas gets a two-on, two-out, two-strike single to tie the game at 2. Arkansas now has runners on first and second with their big star, Andrew Benintendi, at the plate.
ReplyDeleteBenintendi grounds out and the inning is over. But after 6 1/2 innings, Arkansas and Miami are locked in a 2-2 tie.
ReplyDeleteJacob Heyward, whose two-run homer in the fifth gave Miami the lead, now goes all Jackie Robinson on Arkansas. With one out in the seventh, Heyward singles up the middle. Then he steals second. Then he tries to advance to third on a ground ball and the Arkansas shortstop -- desperately trying to get the runner at third -- THROWS THE BALL AWAY. Heyward trots home with the lead run, while the batter scoots all the way to third. Arkansas has now committed 4 errors in the last two innings, and the Canes lead 3-2 with a runner on third.
ReplyDeleteLSU had four errors in their loss to Texas Christian yesterday. It's really rare to see four errors in an MLB game, but there has been some pretty bad defense in the CWS.
ReplyDeleteArkansas escapes with no further damage, but the Razorbacks trail 3-2 going into the 8th inning.
ReplyDeleteTyler Spoon leads off the top of the 8th for Arkansas with a single to right The Arkansas fans -- who are legion -- wave giant spoons in the stands and chant SPOOON.
ReplyDeleteArkansas follows up Spoon's single with an infield hit, and a perfect hit-and-run play. Spoon scores, the game is tied at 3, and the Hawgs have runners on 1st and 3d with nobody out.
ReplyDelete"SPOOOON!"
DeleteThe radio announcers tell us that there is no quit in this Arkansas team.
ReplyDeleteMiami gets a pop-up and a double play, and Arkansas cannot take the lead. After 7 and 1/2, the Canes and the Razorbacks are tied at 3. What a game!
ReplyDeleteMiami goes down 1-2-3 in the 8th. Still tied at 3 going into the 9th.
ReplyDeleteArkansas: 3 runs, 8 hits, 4 errors
Miami: 3 runs, 5 hits, 1 error
Carson Shaddy, Arkansas' 9th-place hitter, leads off the 9th with a single to left.
ReplyDeleteJoe Serrano bunts Shaddy to second. One out.
ReplyDeleteMiami is now bringing in its closer: Brian Garcia. With the lead run on second, the Canes cannot afford another hit.
ReplyDeleteGarcia gets Bobby Wernes to pop up. Two out. Then Garcia walks Benintendi -- Arkansas' best hitter -- on purpose.
ReplyDeleteThe Hawgs have men on first and second with two out. Tyler Spoon comes to the plate. The Arkansas fans wave their giant spoons and yell SPOOOON!
B. Garcia v. Spoon:
ReplyDeletePitch 1: Ball (1-0)
Pitch 2: Called Strike (1-1)
Pitch 3: Swinging Strike (1-2)
Pitch 4: Spoon slaps an infield single to first. The bases are loaded.
SPOOON!
I take it back -- they called an error on the first baseman.
DeleteBases still loaded.
Now it's up to Rick Nomura, the second baseman.
ReplyDeleteESPN tells us that Nomura bats .154 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs.
Nomura grounds out to right and the side is retired.
ReplyDeleteWe head into the bottom of the 9th, still tied at 3.
Willie Abreu, the number-8 hitter for Miami, leads off the bottom of the 9th with a double off the center field wall. Carl Chester enters the game to run for Abreu.
ReplyDeleteThis brings up Jacob Heyward, who is 2-2 with a homer and two runs.
This is Jacob Heyward's day. He whacks a single into center field, and CARL CHESTER COMES HOME WITH THE WINNING RUN!
ReplyDeleteMiami: 4 runs, 7 hits, 2 errors
Arkansas: 3 runs, 9 hits, 4 errors
Arkansas is eliminated. Great, great game.
I don't mean it's great that Arkansas was eliminated. I feel bad for them -- they played very well. But this was an outstanding game.
DeleteWe have now played five games in the College World Series. In all five games, the losing team has scored three runs.
