Paintsville's "New Country" 98.9 FM WSIP is on with the Johnson Central pregame show.
ReplyDeleteThe WSIP commentator just welcomed us to Freedom Hall.
ReplyDeleteJohnson Central's coach: "You don't have many moments in your life like this."
ReplyDeleteI really love hearing about the various hair salons around the state when these local radio stations announce their sponsors. Paintsville has a place called the "Unique Hair Experience." That's pretty good. I still haven't heard a better one, though, than Madisonville's "The Snooty Fox."
ReplyDeleteDay 1 of this tournament was fun.
ReplyDeleteNow Johnson Central and Ballard are tied at 11.
The Paintsville Dairy Queen's Blizzard of the Month is "Grasshopper Moosepie." I wonder if that comes down from DQ corporate or if each franchise picks its own BotM.
ReplyDeleteCorporate.
Delete18-17, Johnson Central, with 7:28 to go in the first half.
ReplyDeleteJohnson Central has a Gullett.
ReplyDelete19-18, Ballard, as the Bruins score the second quarter's first five points.
ReplyDelete21 apiece, six minutes to go to half.
ReplyDeleteAn auto place in Paintsville is donating $25 to St. Jude for each Johnson Central three-pointer; the Golden Eagles have hit at least two. It's 26 all.
ReplyDeleteThis Gullett, 6-foot-6 senior Kyle, is good. He has 12 points, and things are tied at 28.
ReplyDeleteMy Lord, I love this state so much, and I love hearing, reading, listening, driving and talking about it.
ReplyDeleteGO, ERIC! I know how you feel.
DeleteYEAH!
DeleteHalftime: Ballard 40, Johnson Central 34.
ReplyDeletePremier Automotive is the name of the Paintsville place giving money to St. Jude's for three-pointers. The Golden Eagles have made five of them and trail Ballard, 43-40, in the third quarter.
ReplyDelete44-42, Ballard, and the WSIP guys are starting to get angry about the officiating.
ReplyDelete"The same guy has made the last five calls."
ReplyDeleteSixth three-pointer for Johnson Central (that's $150 to St. Jude's), and the score is 46-45. Ballard has not lost to a Kentucky opponent this season.
ReplyDeleteJohnson Central has missed six of seven free-throw attempts, including multiple first shots of one-plus-one opportunities, and it has six turnovers among its last eight possessions. And with 2:52 to go in the third, No. 1 Ballard's lead is 47-45.
ReplyDeleteJason Frakes @kyhighs
ReplyDeleteIt's now a 14-2 run for Ballard, which leads 76-62 with 2:32 left.
12:36 PM - 19 Mar 2015
Johnson Central has been to the State Tournament four years in a row, and they have won a total of one game in those appearances.

Lexington Catholic has led Boyle County through the second game today, by as many as 14 points. But the Rebels have put together a 12-2 run to close within 57-56 with 2:12 to play.
ReplyDeleteTurnover and foul on Lexington Catholic, and Boyle County is going to the free-throw line with a chance to tie and/or take the lead ...
ReplyDeleteGood ... 57 apiece ... good ... 58-57, Boyle ... first Rebel lead since 3-2 ... 1:38 to play ... LexCath timeout ...
ReplyDeleteBoth starting centers have fouled out of the game, as has a Lexington Catholic guard.
ReplyDeleteLexington Catholic rebounds its own miss and then scores ... 59-58, Knights ...
ReplyDeleteBoyle runs the clock all the way to 34.5 seconds to go, and Catholic is whistled for a foul away from the ball ... it sends a less-than-50-percent free-throw shooter to the line, who misses both ...
ReplyDeleteTurnover, Knights ... 28.6 seconds to go ... Boyle County timeout ...
ReplyDeleteJeremiah Bell, a senior guard, dribbles ... penetrates ... backs out ... penetrates ... backs out ... penetrates ... drives ... floats ... shoots ... good!

Lexington Catholic, the 2002 state champ, misses at the buzzer, and Boyle County wins its first-ever Sweet Sixteen game in its fourth state-tournament appearance.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time since 2004 (Lex. Lafayette) for the 11th Region Champ to go out in the first round. It's the first time since 2012 (Southwestern) that the 12th Region champ has survived the first round.
Delete"Anything can happen in March; we all know that," Boyle-hero Jeremiah Bell tells KHSAA.tv as, on TBS, Georgia State becomes the second NCAA-tournament 14th seed to knock on a 3 seed today.
ReplyDeleteEric, what would you do between the sessions in Lexington?
ReplyDeleteCurrent-day me would go to Whole Foods and Joseph Beth because we don't have those places in Madisonville, and so they're a treat when we're in Lexington. Sportswriter me would've hung out in the press room or my hotel lobby writing stuff and eating free food. High-school me would want to go to Spencer's Gifts, Long John Silver's and a music store in a big, fancy mall.
DeleteI want to give credit to the folks at KHSAA.tv -- the picture for the game between Bowling Green and Elliott County is remarkably clear.
ReplyDeleteKHSAA.tv has come a long way. The Internet is getting better.
DeleteLast year, Bowling Green made it to the State Semi-Finals, but the Purples have never played for the state title.
ReplyDeleteElliott County famously went to the State Semi-Finals in 2009, and this is their first appearance in the State Tournament since then.
Ouch. BGHS leads ECHS 43-19 at the half.
ReplyDeleteQuite a first-round capper: Calloway County--down two at half, up 10 in the fourth, down three in final minute of regulation, up two in final seconds of first overtime--beats Knott County Central and Mr. Basketball in double OT, 73-68.
ReplyDeleteIt was the Lakers' first Sweet Sixteen victory in their second appearance. That first trip, in 2003, came under the first watch of Coach Terry Birdsong, who came back to Calloway County this season after seven seasons (and two First Region championships) at Graves County. Birdsong is an old Benton boy who played for Murray Arnold at WKU in the late 1980s.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, I'm already listening to the "Lite Rock 98.7 FM" version of WHOP this morning, in anticipation of Hoptown's quarterfinal with Owensboro at 11. I'm not sure WKU Todd is going to be calling the game on this station, as well, but I can't handle the prepre-game Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannity bilge that would be puddling up on 1230 AM about now.
ReplyDeleteWKU Todd just said on the WHOP FM than the game will be on the WHOP AM, so we'll turn the dial to the right when it's time for the pregame.
Delete"If you like basketball, you're in tall cotton right now," says WKU Todd's partner on WHOP.
ReplyDeleteHear, hear!
Outstanding ... now WKU Todd is giving some love for Lillie Mason and the 1985 Lady Tops! "One of the greatest games I ever saw!"
YEAH!
There's a consignment clothing store in Hoptown called "Sassy Stuff."
ReplyDelete"Look for the pink building on Fort Campbell Boulevard. And, remember, keep it class with Sassy!"
WKU Todd just referred to "Hoptropolis." My guess is that is intended to indicate the greater Hopkinsville/Clarksville listening area.
ReplyDelete"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" by Michael Jackson.
ReplyDeleteI spend a fair amount of time listening to pop radio, and I don't know that we've ever gone through period where there are more songs with a bunch of people hollering rhythmically and playing real instruments. I don't know if the Lumineers launched, perfected or capitalized on this trend, but they certainly had a big impact.

ReplyDeleteIt was 30 years ago today that the Metcalfe Co. Hornets upset Louisville Eastern and Felton Spencer in the 1985 Boys State Basketball Tourn.

We've now posted an "Eight Teams Left" in honor of today's games.
