What's Not On TV Tonight (1969)?
Hoptown's Ugliest Girl In Town fans were disappointed to see that their favorite show is not on tonight's ABC schedule. ABC axed the show after 17 episodes. Here was to be the 18th, which would've aired Feb. 6, 1969:

ReplyDeleteOn behalf of The Ugliest Girl In Town, I will say that I do really like the notion of explaining in very clear terms the whole premise of a show during its regular opening. This show did a very good job with that. Rest in peace, Ugliest Girl In Town.

Adam Ant must've been a big Ugliest Girl In Town fan. He was only 14 when this show was on the air in the United States. Maybe they showed the reruns, including this unaired episode, on the BBC when teen-aged Stuart Goddard was waiting at home in London for his mom to get done cleaning Paul McCartney's house.
So this episode of Ugliest Girls In Town regarded the Soviets as goofs, and so did the show that today 1969 replaces it on ABC, What's It All About, World?, a Laugh-In-influenced variety show. I wonder when it was that TV stopped giving the Hogan's Heroes treatment to the Russians. The Cuban Missile Crisis didn't do it. Maybe it was after we got ripped off in Munich 1972.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, the networks generally avoided treating the Soviets as bad guys. There were a number of early episodes of "Mission: Impossible" where the Soviets were obviously villains.but even they switched over to more generic villains after a few years.
DeleteOn Saturday, February 8, 1969, 11,500 fans packed the Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Kentucky, where the Kentucky Wildcats -- now ranked number 4 in the country -- smashed Ole Miss 104 to 68. Dan Issel had 26 points and 7 rebounds; Mike Pratt had 22 points and 7 rebounds; Mike Casey had 18 points and 6 rebounds.
ReplyDeleteOn Monday, February 10, 1969, another sell-out crowd at Memorial Coliseum saw the Big Blue roll over Mississippi State 91 to 69. Issel had 26 points and 19 rebounds; Casey had 18 points and 9 rebounds; Pratt had only 6 points, but picked up 11 boards.
ReplyDeleteWith the wins over Ole Miss and MSU, UK ran its record to 17-2, and 11-0 in the SEC. The Cats have now won 11 straight.
The AP TV-and-radio writer, Cynthia Lowry, is not impressed with ABC's new show: "The viewer who sat through ABC's new 'What's It All About, World?' during its premiere Thursday night might conclude the producers and writers who called their comedy - variety hour 'satiric' either never read the definition or don't know the difference between the smart-alecky and ironic. ..."
