Alex Poythress is out for the year. He will be greatly missed. I am a huge Poythress fan, and I have very much enjoyed watching him over the last three seasons.
This is the third year in a row that UK has suffered a catastrophic injury -- Nerlens Noel went out in 2013, we lost Willie Cauley-Stein in Sweet 16 of last year's tournament, and now we've lost Poythress. Of course, we also lost Rodney Dent in 1994 and we lost Derek Anderson in 1997. For that matter, we lost Dwight Anderson during the 1979 SEC Tournament, and Sam Bowie never fully recovered from the injury he suffered near the end of the 1981 season.
It is, of course, too early to know what will happen with this year's team, but one thing is for sure: it will not be the team that we have been watching through the first 10 games of the season. We will never get the chance to see what that team could have done. We will just have to hope the best for our new team.
