No one has ever called Melissa Etheridge subtle. At her best she is anything but subtle, but she is also very intimate at her best. It's an interesting combination, but when it works it works very well for her. She's certainly not the only artist who employs such a tactic, think "Candy's Room" by Bruce Springsteen and you get the picture.
The balance of the two can be quite tricky and sad to say it is a balance that is not struck very often on this album. Her sound on this album is bigger than usual for even her, almost getting to arena rock levels, and the lyrics just aren't there on this album to produce any really strong songs.
I'm guessing if you are a big Melissa Etheridge fan, then this album will be OK and you'll find some moments to embrace, but if you are a casual Etheridge fan like me, not so much.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
I like this song. It reminds me of "Girls in Their Summer Clothes," and I love that song.
