Here's where things stand in each of the Super Regionals (home teams listed first):
Stillwater, Oklahoma:
Oklahoma St. 4 - 8 UC Irvine
Oklahoma St. 0 - 1 UC Irvine (UC Irvine wins 2-0)
Austin, Texas:
Texas 4 - 2 Houston
Texas 4 - 0 Houston (Texas wins 2-0)
Louisville, Ky:
Louisville 5 - 3 Kennesaw St.
Louisville 7 - 4 Kennesaw St. (Louisville wins 2-0)
Nashville, Tenn:
Vanderbilt 11 - 6 Stanford
Vanderbilt 4 - 5 Stanford (series tied 1-1)
Lubbock, Tex:
Texas Tech 1 - 0 College of Charleston (Texas Tech leads 1-0)
Fort Worth, Tex:
Texas Christian 3 - 2 Pepperdine (Texas Christian leads 1-0)
Lafayette, La:
La-Lafayette 9 - 5 Mississippi (La-Lafayette leads 1-0)
Charlottesville, Va:
Virginia 4 - 5 Maryland (Maryland leads 1-0)
In the top of the 5th, Virginia leads Maryland 1-0.
ReplyDeleteMaryland puts across a run in the bottom of the 5th to tie the score at 1.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 6th, UVA takes the lead on a triple and ground ball. After 5 1/2, Cavs lead 2-1.
ReplyDeleteUVA tacks on three more runs in the top of the 7th, and the Cavs now lead 5-1.
ReplyDeleteUVA cruises home with a 7-3 win, so that series is now tied 1-1.
ReplyDeleteHOORAY! My apologies to Vandy, as the Dores are going to the College World Series for the second time in school history. Vandy jumped out to a 5-0 lead, Stanford closed to within 6-5, but then Vandy put up four runs in the 7th and two more in the 8th for the final margin. They beat a great team -- Stanford was trying to reach the CWS for the 17th time.
ReplyDeleteVandy will be part of a group that includes UC Irvine, Texas, and Louisville. One of those four teams will play for the National Championship.
Vandy is also likely to be the only SEC team to make it to the CWS. The Dores don't often get to carry the flag for the whole Conference.
ReplyDeleteThey had huge crowds at Vandy for all three playoff games. So I'm proud of the Vandy faithful.
In Lubbock, Texas Tech is going for its second consecutive 1-0 win over the College of Charleston. The Red Raiders lead 1-0, and they are batting in the top of the 9th.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's it. Texas Tech sweeps C of C, 1-0 and 1-0, and the Red Raiders are off to Omaha for the first time in school history.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, in Fort Worth, Texas Christian is trying to become the third team from the Lone Star State to reach the CWS. The Horned Frogs won the first game of their playoff with Pepperdine yesterday. In today's game, there is no score in the top of the fourth.
ReplyDeleteAnother monster crowd in Fort Worth, where they have a very nice double-deck grandstand all around the infield -- as well as a much of folks camped out under trees in the outfield. In the bottom of the 5th, Pepperdine takes a 1-0 lead.
ReplyDeletePepperdine tacks on two more runs in the bottom of the 7th to make the score 3-0 Waves.
ReplyDeleteIn Lafayette, Louisiana, the Ragin' Cajuns are about to host Ole Miss in the last game of the day.
But the Horned Frogs are fighting back. In the top of the 8th, they have scored one run and they have a runner on third with only one out.
ReplyDeleteA single to left makes the score 3-2. Still one out. The tying run is on first. The lead run is at the plate.
ReplyDeleteThe runner advanced to second on an out, and then tried to score from second on a single to the outfield. The catcher was waiting with the ball, so the runner tried to leap the catcher and touch home plate. He didn't make it. The top of the 8th is over, and Pepperdine still leads 3-2.
ReplyDeleteThere have been big crowds at all the venues today, but there is an ENORMOUS crowd in Lafayette. All of Cajun country seems to have turned out to see if La-Lafayette can win a spot in Omaha.
ReplyDeletePepperdine hangs on to beat TCU 3-2, so that series is tied 1-1.
