The Regional Tournaments are now finished, and the results were very surprising. Only two SEC teams survived. Only two ACC teams survived, and one of those teams is leaving the ACC. Only three of the top 8 overall seeds survived. And three of the eight Super Regionals are now being played in Texas.
Here's what happened:
SUPER REGIONAL ONE:
Oregon State, the number one overall seed, was eliminated at home by UC Irvine. Oklahoma State won its regional at home. So Oklahoma State will now host UC Irvine in the Super Regionals.
SUPER REGIONAL TWO:
LSU, the number eight overall seed, was crushed at home 12-2 by Houston last night, so the Tigers have been eliminated. Texas beat Texas A & M 4-1 to win a region that was actually hosted by Rice. So now we get another Southwest Conference rematch: Texas hosts Houston in the Super Regionals.
SUPER REGIONAL THREE:
Nobody had a better weekend than Louisville, which cruised through its region with three easy wins over Kent State, Kansas, and Kentucky. Then it turns out that instead of going to Tallahassee to play Florida State -- the number five overall seed -- Louisville will host Kennesaw State, which managed to win the Tallahassee Regional without ever having to play FSU.
SUPER REGIONAL FOUR:
Vanderbilt also had a pretty good weekend. The Dores swept through their regional at home. And instead of having to travel to number four seed Indiana, Vanderbilt will host Stanford, who beat Indiana 10-7 and 5-4 to win the Bloomington Region.
SUPER REGIONAL FIVE:
Florida, the number two overall seed, lost to College of Charleston and North Carolina and were eliminated. Miami (Fla.), which was hosting the Coral Gables Region, lost two out of three to Texas Tech and were also eliminated. So Texas Tech will host College of Charleston in the Super Regionals.
SUPER REGIONAL SIX:
The number seven overall seed, Texas Christian, actually won its region. But Cal Poly, which hosted a regional an San Luis Obispo, was not so fortunate. So Texas Christian will host Pepperdine.
SUPER REGIONAL SEVEN:
The number six overall seed, Louisiana-Lafayette, stormed through the loser's bracket to knock out Mississippi State and advance to the Super Regional. Louisiana-Lafayette will host Mississippi, which also won its region at home.
SUPER REGIONAL EIGHT:
Virginia, the number three overall seed, cruised through its region with little trouble. But South Carolina was beaten 4-3 and 10-1 at home by Maryland -- a team that hasn't played in the NCAA Baseball Tournament since 1971. So now Virginia will host Maryland in the last time these two old foes will play an all-ACC showdown.
