The big story last week was that Caldwell County beat Mayfield 48-41 in the Game of the Year in western Kentucky. It was Mayfield's first loss of the year, its first loss to anyone since August 17, 2012, and its and Mayfield's first loss to a team from west of Bowling Green since October 30, 2009 -- when the Cardinals lost at Caldwell County. (The last time a western Kentucky team other than Caldwell County beat Mayfield was November 28, 2008, when Crittenden County (!) beat Mayfield 26-13 in the 1A Playoffs.)
Anyway, the Mayfield / Caldwell game was a great example of what high school football can be. It's too bad it wasn't a playoff game -- we have too many classes in Kentucky, and it's a shame that so many great games (like this one) are basically just being played for fun.
Here are last week's scores (home teams listed first):
Caldwell Co. 48 - 41 Mayfield
Calloway Co. 7 - 45 Trigg Co.
Ft. Campbell 35 - 38 Loretto (Tenn.)
Franklin-Simpson 48 - 14 Hopkinsville
Fulton Co. 0 - 47 Murray
Marshall Co. 28 - 49 Graves Co.
McCracken Co. 43 - 26 Christian Co.
Russellville 6 - 21 S. Warren
Union Co. 49 - 14 Hopkins Co. Cent.
