They're having a funeral this morning at Paducah's Broadway United Methodist Church for Carl Duane "Red" Nickell, and, wow ... 1944 Augusta Tilghman all-state blocking back/quarterback, "Battle of the Bulge" award winner, student medical trainer for coaches Bryant and Rupp at UK, Paducah junior-high football-coaching success, desegregation-advocating director of Paducah's public parks, Troop 3 Scoutmaster, Sunday-school teacher, transporter of elderly and disabled opthalmology patients, ref, father of two sons, husband of 64 years ... What a life!
And then here's a post at the Miller and Orr Funeral Home web site from yesterday evening:
Ms. Nickell, This is Jason McClure. I don't know if you remember me or not, but I used to do your pest control service with Terminix. I want you to know how sorry I am to hear about Mr. Nickell. I always looked forward to coming to your house each time and getting to spend a few minutes talking to you. You and Mr. Nickell were always so kind to me and I want you to know you will always have a special place in my heart. Sincerely, Jason
Man ... doesn't get any sweeter than that.
Rest in peace, Mr. Nickell. Well done, Mr. McClure. Hooray for people!
